Saaz and Bobek hops recipe!

Post by dunks » Sat Dec 08, 2012 12:35 pm

Hey guys, after my last brew I have around 70/80g of Saaz and Bobek hops which I want to use up, so I'll be needing a recipe!

I can't seem to find any recipes which use these two hops (other than my last brew, a form of wheat beer). Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe some kind of light American Pale Ale?

Did you bitter with Bobek and flavour with Saaz? I'd suggest that. I did a wheat ale like this but I think the results would be fine with barley as well.
I'm all for Saaz-only beers, too. Saaz are a great hop. Bit of honey after the bubbles have calmed down and you're laughing.

30g of Saaz for the full 90 minute boil, then 20g Bobek steeped after flameout for around 25-30 minutes.

I might just try and mix a few recipes, see what happens :)

Butcombe Blond is made using these two hops, bittered with bobek and then bobek and shed loads of saaz at the end, last 10 mins.
They actually use Styrian but its the same thing more or less.

If I may be so bold, I think you're putting the cart before the horse. Decide the kind of beer you want to brew, irregardless of hops, then plug the corresponding recipe into brew calculator/software of your choice, substituting your hop cultivars up to the specified IBU.

I've never had a Saaz-Bobek-hopped beer, to my knowledge, but it sure sounds delicious. Personally, I'd probably make a nice session-strength blonde ale first, with a basic pale grainbill and relatively neutral yeast, bittered to about 30IBU with a little Bobek and lots of Saaz in the late aroma stages, just for a base-line. No matter what, should be a tasty pint. Then fine-tune from there on your next brew, using your new-found knowledge.
