first formulated receipe

Post by wilfh » Wed Mar 13, 2013 10:42 pm

Hello
this is my first receipe so can someone cast their eye over it and tell me what they think.
thanks

Pale malt 4.2kg 91%
Carramalt 300g 6.5%
torrified weak 100g 2.2%

90 minute boil
Cascade 60g

10 minutes from end.
Amarillo 50g
sg 1.045 EBU 57

Is this an APA?
Cheers
Wilf

What's torrified weak? ;-) :-p

When are you adding those hops? Not much info there: depends when they go in as to how much bitterness they'll give and how much aroma.... I'd add LOADS, LATE - and dry hop it too, then it'll be an APA!

APA guidelines to be used at Saltaire (from BJCP) are:
Vital Statistics: OG: 1.045 – 1.060
IBUs: 30 – 45 FG: 1.010 – 1.015
SRM: 5 – 14 ABV: 4.5 – 6.2%

It looks good, should be tasty, tastier still if you reduce the bittering hops snd increase the late hops, but its all down to personal taste :)
no palate, no patience.

Drinking - of course

Agree with the others.

Grain bill is spot on.
I would throw 20g Cascade and 15 amarillo in at 90 min
15g Cascade and 15 amarillo at 15 min
and throw the rest in at flameout

Should give you about 40 IBU - about right for that strength beer (of course brew what YOU like) but might be slightly more complex/ flavoursome

Good classic american pale ale recipe though...

Thanks All
I think that I will give your hop regime a whirl as I haven't really got my head around IBU's yet.

I don't crash cool (yet) so how long should I leave the hops in at flame out before draining?

Thanks

Well how did it go

I changed things a little from the original plan and I’m looking forward to the results

Here’s what I did
4.2kg Pale Malt
300g Homemade caramalt (as Seymour has indicated elsewhere)
10g Amber Malt (use up)
80g Torrified Wheat

Mashed at 65C

75 min boil 20g Cascade 15g Amarillo
15 minutes 15g Cascade and 15g Amarillo
Flame out 20g Amarillo 15g Cascade

Cooled with my shiny new immersion cooler to 25 and pitched the dregs of the yeast from a Brewlabs Yorkshire 1 cake.

Its light in colour which is expected and smells wonderful.1.045 with 22 litres

General consensus seems to be steep for 15-30 mins, then drain.

I like the look of that brew, should be a belter.

That's good as I left them in there while it cooled. It took about 30-40 mins to come down to 25C.
hoping for a belter- It smells fab and is now fermenting away. It's the first time I've used the yeast cake from a previous brew as never that organised.
There were a lot of firsts in this brew, new receipe, new imersion cooler and yeast cake.

I can't wait to crack it open already.

This has turned into an amazing honeyed beer with lots of bitterness and hoppy goodness. Not as much aroma as I was expecting but an amazing taste. I guess the aroma is down to the yeast
Thoroughly recommend.
You would have thought that honey had been added.
