Non lager recipes for lager lovers...
Non lager recipes for lager lovers...
Hey all. Im after an easy drinking recipe (A lager-ish brew but easier and quicker to produce that my lager drinking friends might like). I think something like an ozzy pale ale in the form of little creatures or coopers? Has anyone any decent straight forward recipes or advice on brews for lager loving mates?

Pale Malt + hops of your choice + Nottingham or US-05 yeast.

Little creatures pale ale is something I definitely want to brew at some point, I paid an outrageous £4.60 for a 330ml bottle yesterday. I'd forgotten just how nice it is so it was still money well spent. I found this article a while ago which gives you a recipe from the brewer. Also check out the Aussie home brewer forum as there are a few recipes on there.

I just did a pils and fermented the boiler dead space dregs with s04 in a demi john. It is really nice and also v clear due to s04 dropping so quickly. Id recommend that.
Um doing a little creatures clone soon!

Great link Underground joe, i'll be trying that at somepoint. Beerbeerbeer, what temp did you ferment at with s04? Im guessing that the lower end of the s04 temp would create a slightly more authentic lagerish result?

It was just in a demi john in the hallway ~ not v scientific but id guess it was at the low end. Im sure to my mates it would pass as lager.

Kolsch is a good one too, although it still may have too much flavour if their idea of lager is Bud or Carlsberg!
It is great beer when done well, with subltle maltyness and fresh hop flavour. Tettnanger is my favourite, but any German type noble hop will work.
I think that Mount hood would also work well
WLP 029 is a versatile yeast too, you can use it in Pale Ales and US IPA's!
Cheers!

Unless they're buying the ingredients.
I'm just here for the beer.

I wouldn't mind something that the lager drinkers would like.

Blond ale type thing?
100% lager malt, one 15m big hop addition for a nice hoppy flavour beer or the standard 60m bitter addition then some late additions. Use something like s05 for yeast

Actually had tesco's own 'golden ale' yesterday and fair play to them, actually listed the specific ingredients as lager malt, golding and fuggles hops. Not amazing but not a bad brew by any means. Wish most brewers/distributers would be more specific when listing their ingredients.
