Re: Dartmoor Brewery's Jail Ale
Just thought I'd post a photo of my Jail Ale, I've made four in a row now!
Love it!!
I see Gervin have upgraded their GV12 yeast that I use, even better now, sprinkle on top and leave, no need to stir and no starter to make!
First one used on Sunday and it was bubbling away in hours! (Pitched at 24˚C)

I'm really surprised you get the Dartmoor flavour with Gervin. Don't suppose you fancy sending me a bottle

Re: Dartmoor Brewery's Jail Ale
Possibly...
I wouldn't send this brew as I used Brupak Ale yeast as I'd ran out of Gervin and it has a different taste to it which is tolerable but I won't be using it again.
I've had 10 packs of Gervin delivered now.

Re: Dartmoor Brewery's Jail Ale
I would have thought a lower attenuating yeast would give you a closer clone?
Cheers and gone,

Re: Dartmoor Brewery's Jail Ale
As I understand it Gervin is a neutral yeast allowing the malt and hop flavours through which is what I want to taste.
It's 75% attenuating and as I bottle all my beer I use it as it stays firmly on the bottom of the bottle allowing me to empty all the beer into my glass!
Gervin have improved the yeast some how so now it's even easier to use. No more making a starter, just sprinkle on top and no stirring! Started fermenting after a few hours!
The Brupak yeast was awful! i went in the LHBS to get some S-04, knowing they didn't sell Gervin but they'd sold out of S-04, the brupak was all they had, bloody awful put like a creamy, milky taste to it, bloody awful!!
I think my attempt at Jail is a bit more bitter and hoppy than the real thing but I love it and made 4 in a row!
GERVIN YEAST RULES! OK!!

Re: Dartmoor Brewery's Jail Ale
You should still be rehydrating your yeast. Yeast in yeast no matter what. You don't 'have to' rehydrate but it's always advised.

Re: Dartmoor Brewery's Jail Ale
Just following manufacturers instructions Belter!
Anyway Belter, I bought a bottle of Jail to do a taste test...
Mine is on the left, the original on the right.
Mine is slightly darker and less hoppy!
I did enjoy the extra hops, I'll add some more Goldings towards the end.
I've drank most of my Jail Ale out at the Red Lion, Exbourne which is served straight from the keg, it tastes nothing like the bottled version!
But still, at the end of the day, i've brewed a pint that suits my palette and enjoy drinking probably a little too much!!!
Cheers for now!

Re: Dartmoor Brewery's Jail Ale
I went to Princetown last weekend and became well acquainted with Jail Ale at the Plume of Feathers.
After getting caught up in all that new world citrus Citra hype it was a revelation rediscovering such a nice and "normal" pint.
Could you please post your recipe for Jail Ale as I have to recreate it.

Re: Dartmoor Brewery's Jail Ale
If I get a chance tomorrow I'll post recipes.
I'm bottling the latest version of Jail ale tomorrow.
It's a bit different to the original I call it Jail Break now!
(And that's copyrighted!!)

Re: Dartmoor Brewery's Jail Ale
Ok, original recipe.
Brewlength 23l
OG 1048
FG 1012
ABV 4.8%
IBU 30.6
EBC 21.2
MO 4.489kg
Med Crystal 0.731kg
Hops @ 60 mins
Progress 5.5% 17g
Goldings 5.5%. 16g
Fuggles 4.5%. 16g
Hops @ 15mins
Goldings 5.5%. 16g
I'd say it was close, maybe a different yeast would get it closer but it's a starting point.
I didn't brew for a year or so due to bad health and I've stopped trying to clone and just enjoy the beers I make.
This one I've made more than any other and it has developed into this recipe.
Brewlength 25l
OG 1043
FG 1010
ABV 4.3%
IBU 38.6
EBC 16.2
MO 4.139kg
Med Crystal 0.674kg
Hops @ 60mins
Progress 5.5%. 24g
Golding 5.7%. 23g
Willamette 5.2%. 21g
Hops @ 15mins
EKG 4.6%. 31g
Hops @ flame out
Willamette 5.2% 20g
Dry hops for 5 days
Willamette 5.2%. 35g
Yeast
Notts
Going for a liquid yeast next time. I've started using WLP041 and plan to reuse this as much as possible so might be that one.
Before I forget, my target OG was 1039 because I know I get a high mash efficiency, my actual OG was as stated 1043.
My mash efficiency on this brew was 89.8%.
Bottled this today, tastes pretty good, very smooth, gonna be moorish I think!!
I'll let you know 14th Aug!
Hope this helps, let me know how you get on!
Cheers

Hello
I've been away from Jims for some time as my brewhouse is being rebuilt, wason Dartmoor this weekend and had some lovely ales,my fave being Jail Ale. Absolutely lovely proper English ale. So pleased to have found this recipe on here. The extension should be built by May so this is head of the list!
