A quick question about Devon:
I've seen some clone recipes for Tally Ho Inn & Brewery in Hatherleigh, Devon. I thought the brewery closed around 2001, but I recently saw a 2008 review of their beer, supposedly brewed behind the pub. Do you know if they're still brewing?

Hi Seymour,
Found this http://www.information-britain.co.uk/re ... 148&type=1

It shows a review done on the pub in 2008.

Take a look here too, this is a pub I frequent often and is one of two pubs in Devon that do not have any pumps on the bar!

Well, I hate to say it but my first attempt was an absolute disaster!

I think it was a problem with the yeast as it took about a week to start fermenting and looked horrible on top the krausen!

I've used Gervin English Ale yeast for over a year now and this is the first time i've had a problem.

I let it ferment down to 1.010, which took about 3 weeks in all, and then bottled it but after a week in a warm airing cupboard it is still cloudy and tastes awful!

So I think this one is for the drain and I'll try again.

I Can't imagine a bottle of jail ale being as dry as 1.010? Initially I thought perhaps it was infected but if it was it'd most likely go lower than 1.010.

It's always annoying when a brew fails. Try again and let us know. I'm itching for this recipe. Going to do a brewery visit in July.

Best of luck!

By the way, I looked at the Red Lion pub link you provided. Just...wow. That's exactly the kind of place I drink in my dreams. The menu looks phenomenal too, do you eat there often? Deep-fried breaded brie with red currant jam?! Green Thia chicken curry? Sign me up.

Hi Seymour, I've eaten there a few times and the food is just great!
Steaks are superb!

I was there last night infact sampling the Jail Ale! Hope mine gets close!

It amazes me, it's a pub in a small rural village and on a Thursday night it's busy, people coming and going all night.
It's one of those places you're happy to travel to.

There's another pub a bit further away that you may like as well it's called The Bridge Inn at Topsham. This is the other pub in Devon that has no pumps on the bar.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink ... xeter.html

They have jazz musician turn up on a Sunday afternoon for an impromptu jam.

Also, there's a link towards the bottom of the page to the Tom Cobley Tavern at Spreyton which is another outstanding pub.

Cheers

I'm impressed you managed to get it so close with Gervin. I thought it had a kind of Fuller's vibe to it.

I've tried other yeasts but I seem to get on well with Gervin, apparently it's the same strain as Nottingham so its a neutral yeast letting the malt and hop flavours through and half the price!!
£1.09 from my LHBS!

Cheers all
