Citra IPA

Post by Jymbo » Thu May 09, 2013 1:54 pm

I've grown very fond of the Citra IPA from M&S recently - it's brewed by Oakham Ales and I understand it's a stronger version (4.9%) of their own Citra Pale Ale which I think is more like 4.2% (never tasted this one but it has a good reputation)

Anyway, at £2.59 a pop the Citra IPA is a bit pricey so I'm going to attempt a clone. I was thinking 95% MO and 5% Munich for the grist. After that just Citra additions at 60mins, 30mins 10mins and flameout.

I've only got 100g of Citra, so I may use something else for bittering if necessary.

Just wondered if anyone had had a try at this or anything similar?

We often have the Citra Pale Ale here in our local real ale pubs, were are not far from Oakham here. It's quite a nice, very light and tangy.

I think you are maybe right in using mainly MO Pale Malt with just Citra hops. I've not used them myself but it's quite a hoppy beer so stick the lot in but save some for a dry hop too!

Having tried it I know it's very pale indeed. I didn't find it to be very malty and it was very light in body so I'm not sure about the Munich.

Hello,

I would use 95% low Colour MO, 5% malted wheat and use something like wlp001 or s05 for the yeast.

bitter with something like Magnum if you dint have enough Citra, basically something that wont impact on the flavor and then use ur 100g for the late additions and dryhop.

+1 to all the above comments, but for what it's worth, my notes indicate Oakham Citra is 92% Maris Otter and 8% Pale Crystal Malt (which probably isn't so different from Munich Malt in this case.)

I'd keep all your Citra additions late/at flameout. Either hop burst it or bitter with something else.

bitter with magnum, leave out the 30 minute citra addition, going 20g for 15, 10, 5, flameout and dry hop. or, buy more citra and double the late additions whilst leaving out the bittering

Last summer I had a few pints near Belper of a stronger Citra Ale from Oakham brewery that sounds suspiciously like the draft version of the M&S one. Never seen it anywhere else, loved it and will now try the M&S bottled version prior to attempting a clone.

I'd think you might need 200g for a 23L batch though

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I've ordered up another 100g of Citra. I had a couple more bottles of Citra IPA last night - I think there is more to it than just Pale Malt - it's very bitter so I reckon it'll need a few perecent Munich or Pale Crystal to keep it balanced. I've ordered up another 100g of Citra from the MaltMiller and a some muslin hop bags for dry hopping too. Hope to get this brew on by the end of the week.

BTW, the Zombie Dust recipe looks excellent -that's going on the TODO list, though I must confess I haven't reached page 97 of the post yet.......
