NelsonWaka

Post by soupdragon » Mon Jun 10, 2013 6:06 pm

Hi All

Planning a brew day either tomorrow or Wed

Any thoughts on the following?

4000g Pale Malt
200g Caramalt

Nelson Sauvin 25g 20 mins before end of boil
Riwaka 25g 20 mins before end of boil
Nelson Sauvin 25g 5 mins before end of boil
Riwaka 25g 5 mins before end of boil
Nelson Sauvin 50g Dry hop after 7 days of ferment for 7 days
Riwaka 50g Dry hop after 7 days of ferment for 7 days

US-05

All thoughts welcome :D

Cheers Tom

Just finished another keg of Sara Carter's Bombay IPA at around 6% so I'm after something a little lower for this next one
Any particular reason for your suggestion?

Cheers Tom

Looks like a good drop to me, but if I was doing it, I would get some Nelson hops in around 60mins, say 20g

Then add the rest as you stated ;)

Just for extra bittering? I wouldn't think you'd get much flavour from that addition.
That should take it from aroung 40 ebu to about 67, it's a bit of a hike.

Only that if it's going to be hoppy I like it a bit stronger but I suppose you're not really going that crazy on the hops.

Hoppy, as in bitter? Or hoppy, as in flavour?

200g will be the most I've used in one brew so far. I'm hoping for more flavour rather than a heavily bittered beer :)

Bitter mainly but I don't know the AAs of those particular hops. I'm sure it will taste great so give it a go.

The Nelson's are around 12.5%, the Riwaka 5.5%

I've still got time to fiddle and re-jig things :)

id add a little low alpha hops (celeia or saaz) to the start of the boil(but only because my system always boils over if I don't!)

otherwise that looks bloody great tom, take it the n.s. and riwaka sparked your taste buds? :D

I think the beer will be damn tasty without any heavy start of boil additions =D>

Hi Critch

I've been rather taken by Nelson's since I first tasted Kipling some year ago and the Riwaka have a certain smoothing too :-)
I'll probably just go with it as is. I don't really suffer with boil overs as my hob is barely up to the job of dealing with 30 odd litres of lovely beer juice. I can get it boiling but it's not as vigorous as I'd like :-(
When I get my early retirement pension pay out, Mrs soupdragon is getting a new kitchen so I'm going to suggest she has a nice powerful centre burner on the hob ;-)

Must get something bigger for dry hopping

I could only get 50g in the muslin sock. Only noticed when the bag actually filled up so it's all Riwaka. If I think on, I'll get some more socks and add the Nelson's tomorrow.

Cheers Tom

Where did you get your Nelson S - impossible to get round here. Local home brew shop saying wait another few weeks?

Managed to add the 50g of Nelson after all.

That sheet of voile really does come in handy :D
