Line's stouts

Post by David Edge » Sat Jul 21, 2007 2:23 pm

A few days in ago in another thread, I asked whether Line's stout was 7:1:1 or 7:2:1 pale:flaked:roast. One response was:
I always thought that Guinness for one was 7:2:1 pale malt, flaked barley, roast barley. So did David Line. I would tentatively suggest that the Beeston Beer Circle were talking out of their collective A*ses. Of course, other Irish stouts differ from that. I'm only referring to Guinness.
I finally hauled my backside out of my chair, leaned across and had a look at Line's books. BBLTYB goves 7:2:1 for 'Guinness'; however in The Big Book of Brewing p238 he wrote "After many trials I consider that my recipe for 'Goodness Stout' is as near to draught Guinness as it is possible to brew on amateur equipment." That recipe is 7:1:1. So I think we should accept the good folk of Beeston were not entirely up the pole on this one!

I think the "Big Book" is the later one - can anyone confirm; also can anyone say whether he changed his mind or if one is a typo?

Both of my copies are "12th Impression 1985", with the BBOB being 'Copyright Argos Books ltd 1985' and BBLTYB 'Copyright Argos Books ltd 1984'. Both books have 'Amateur Winemaker' on the front. Since DL died in 1980, these dates are presumably meaningless.

The respective recipes for Guinness are as described in David's post. :?

I have the Big Book of Brewing published by Amateur Winemaker in 1974; the recipe is 7:1:1. I also have BBLTYB published in 1978 where the recipe is 7:2:1. Have made the former and it tasted pretty much like a bottled Guiness did back in my younger days !

Cheers

My 1984 edition BBOB recipe is 7.1.1.
