Motueka Pale. Too much?

Post by soupdragon » Fri Jan 03, 2014 7:31 pm

Hi All

Just got a Mad Goose ( ish ) on and am planning my next brew.

Going for something easy on the palate but with a bit of a zing to it.
I'm looking at...........

Pale Malt 3600g
Caragold 400g
Torrified Wheat 250g
Motueka 100g @ 10 mins before end of boil 30 EBU
Motueka 100g @ 5 mins before end of boil 16 EBU
Yeast Malt Miller's West Coast Style
Mashing at around 68/9c for a bit more body/mouthfeel.

Got some Vienna that I might sub for the Caragold but not sure yet, got some Bombay IPA's to do so will need Vienna for them =P~

Soooooo, too much Motueka? Thanks Critch  . Not used them before so unsure how far to take them.
Your thoughts......

Cheers Tom

Not too much at all but I'd hold back 20g to dry hop.
I buy from The Malt Miller

Got 375g in total to play with.
Never really had that much success with dry hopping to be honest, it's always seemed a bit underwhelming. Although the 1st time I did it ( Citra ), it did turn out ok. Having said that, I've been a bit daft over the last two years and bought up quite a few packs of hops and have only recently started storing them in the freezer so the ones I've used up to now may have lost their edge :(
Got quite a few brews to get through before I need to buy more hops.

Cheers Tom

I'm in a similar position and doing quite a few single hop beers to get through a backlog in my freezer.

Looks good to me!
That's pretty much my pale ale grain bill, but I lower the car ahold if it's got an OG over 1045 And sub in a bit more pale...

@ beeroclock I'd be inclined to also dry hop with 2-3G/litre...

I did a motueka beer and used green bullet too and I think they work really well together, but you did say you wanted a single hop beer (?)

Cheers

Have you tried using a blender to whizz up the dry hops? Emulates pellet hops. Also, how long do you leave the dry hops in?

Yeah but the hops I used weren't really that fresh. The opened pack had been in the freezer but prior to that they had just been in a cool dark place. We're over 3 years old when I used them so might not have been in the best of condition :-( once I've used up most of my existing stock I'm hoping things will improve :-)
