Random Brew

Post by max0 » Thu Mar 20, 2014 12:25 am

Quick question Im planning a brew in the next few days and have the following grains and hops.

Grain:
3.55kg Maris otter
230g crystal
115g wheat

Hops:
61g fuggles
And maybe a few 10g at best goldings

Is it ok to just use fuggles of do I need to order some more hops?
How many hops should I put in at the start of the boil and near the end?

Like quite a hoppy taste and aroma so should I put more in at the end? Or just go with a 50 / 50 split?

For the hops, if you like taste and aroma, then you'd want to be doing mostly 15 min (flavour) and flame-out additions (aroma). To add more aroma, try a bit of dry hopping after the bulk of fermentation is complete. For bitterness, it all depends on your brew length and alpha acid content of the hops. Think fuggles have a low a acid %. The key to bitterness extraction is a long, healthy rolling boil from what I've been told.

I've only used fuggles once and didn't find them to be all that great. They're a bit too grassy for me.

I normally mash and boil for 90 mins. I'm tempted to go for half at the start of the boil and half plus the goldings with about 5/10 mins left of the boil. Or at flame out. Just wanted some opinions as I normally stick to receipes.

What is the aa of the hops and what is your brew length?
The grist is quite standard and i imagine it will give you around 4% abv.

I like fuggles but they are low aa. If your beer turns out at aroukd 4% then i suggest a max of 20-25ibu which will be possible with late additions.
Which yeast are you using? Notty will be drier and bring the hops forward more than S 04 as will S05

Hi Dave 23l and S04 yeast. Not sure on the AA as they are lying about from a brew I did last week. I guess about 5% from reading BYOBRA by Graham Wheeler. To get 20 / 25 ibu what about would you think I need at the start of the boil and at late additions? Many thanks Andy

All the Fuggles I've used in the last year or so have been around the 6.3% area, which is higher than they're usually known for. The same with Goldings - 6.5ish
Best wishes

Ok. so i ran this one through beersmith.

based on 5% Alpha and a 23 l brewlength. 60 minute boil.

40 grams fuggles at 60 minutes
21 grams fuggles at 5 minutes
then dump the goldings in at flame out for a steep.

this will give you an OG of around 1,039 ish ( based om 75% efficiency) and an IBU of 24.8 providing the hops have been stored well.

The IBU may vary slightly based on your fuggles strength. i've saved the file om my phone so can make adjustments if you want.

As i said this is just my rough look nothing set in stone.
