Me and my brew mate are going to do our 2nd brew this bank holiday monday. Just looking for any feedback on our recipe. See what all you experts think. Were pretty new to the game. But have managed to make a more than decent brew. So cant wait to try this one.
Recipe is
5kg maris otter pale
150g crystal
100g biscuit
50g rolled oats
Mashed for 80mins at 66degrees
2xbatch sparge at 10mins each
90min boil
45g admiral hops 90mins
20g first gold 20mins
10g first gold 5
Vial california ale yeast wlp001
Dry hopped during fermentation with 30g admiral

Re: new recipe
I think it looks pretty good but you may want to lower the amount of admiral hops you add at the start of the boil as you are doing 90 mins the IBUs will be quite hi, unless you are going for a high IBU beer? You need to balance this with sweetness and maltyness otherwise it can come out too bitter. Did you calculate the IBUs? I'm no expert so it may come out great...

Re: new recipe
Agreed, recipe looks fine but hops need balancing. I would reduce boil to 60mins but add up to 50g last edition First Gold. I like Admiral but it can be an acquired taste. Never dry hopped with them either but would love to know how it turns out. Also give it at least 3-5 days fermentation before dry hopping.

Can't be arsed to keep changing this bit, so, drinking some beer and wanting to brew many more!

Re: new recipe
Weve never used admiral before. I know the alpha acids sre quite high. But were looking for quite a punch of hop bitterness. And were looking for a orangy flavour and citrusy hop aroma. The notes from the admiral hops sound the best for that. I may lower the amount by 5grams on the first addition. And up the dry hop to 40-45g. And yeah we'll add the hops after 3 days fermening. We did that with our last brew and it turned out great. Fingers crossed

Re: new recipe
would reduce the boil time to 60 minutes,
I work on an IBU/OG ratio of around 0.5-0.6/1 if that helps, so an og of say 1050 will see me as a rule with an IBU of around 30 ish or so.
Personally i would also increase the sparge time to at least 15 minutes after the malt has been stirred up, that is however a matter of personal preference.
