RECIPE FOR MARSTONS SINGLE MALT

Hi all, has Anybody by any chance got a recipe for this beer, I understand it`s made from Scottish Golden Promise malt barley + English hops, (not sure which) Uncle of mine says he used to love this brew, but I think it`s no longer made. I have some crisp maris otter would this be ok to use as I can see Scottish Golden Promise malt barley is quite expensive. Any help here appreciated, would love to make something very close to this. Golden Promise isn't that expensive, maybe 10p a kilo more than MO. I see Pedigree, according to Roger Protz is made with a single malt and hopped with Fuggles, EKG and WGV.

I agree, the "single malt" name was a reference to 100% Golden Promise malt, a pale malt grown in Scotland. Get it? Single Malt Scotch...
Then hopped with Fuggles and Goldings hops (maybe Whitbread Goldings Variety too, but many Marstons recipes were originally just Fuggles and Goldings).

Maris Otter certainly won't make bad beer, it just won't be as authentic a clone, if that's the name of the game.

Hi, many thanks for the reply`s . I`ve got the Graham wheeler British real ale (3rd edition) . Two Marston`s recipes in book ....Burton bitter & Pedigree (pages 170 / 171) Both say Pale malt & black malt (small amount), I see also Goldings, Fuggles, Whitbred Goldings. Can anyone give me some idea of quantities for a decent clone of this brew using Maris otter or the Golden promise. ( if I can get it at right price) Thanks, Dave.

With all due respect, ignore the black malt suggestion. That is Graham's preferred method of tweaking colour, presumably due to his disdain for brewers caramel, which Marstons uses in Pedigree (and most other brews, for that matter, there's nothing shameful about it.)

In this case, the brewer clearly states on the label "Brewed with a 100% Golden Promise Malt and our fine aroma hops." If they're telling the truth, that means no black malt allowed. In this case, there's no colour correction necessary anyway, it's a self-described "Pale Golden Ale." The label also claims it was conditioned in oak casks. I'm beginning to understand why your uncle remembers this so fondly! Sounds a lot like a classic 80 Shilling Scottish Ale to me.

Brewery: Marstons (historic, 1890-present) - Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, UK

5 Imperial gallons = 6 US gallons = 22.7 Liters

all-grain clone recipe

GRAINBILL
100% = 9 lbs = 4.08 kg, Scottish Golden Promise Pale Malt

MASH at 150°F/65.5°C for 60 min

HOPS
1.1 oz = 31 g, Fuggles, 90 min
1.1 oz = 31 g, Goldings (and optionally Whitbread Goldings Variety as well), 20 min

YEAST
Proprietary Marstons English ale strain, originally multistrain, but White Labs WLP026 might be one of the single-strains. Conditioned in oak casks.

STATS (assuming 75% mash efficiency and 75% yeast attenuation)
OG: 1043
FG: 1011
ABV: 4.2%
IBU: 30
Colour: golden

Thanks Seymour, that`s exactly what I was looking for. Soon as I get chance I`m definitely going to have a go at this recipe. :) Don`t have any oak casks so corny will have to do :) Appreciated, Dave.
