Crystal Rye IPA - choose my hops!
Crystal Rye IPA - choose my hops!
Hi
I've 5kg Maris, 1kg Crystal Rye (plus bits of Light Crystal and Carapils if that's good)
I want to make an IPA highlighting one of these hops (which I have 100g of each):
Citra
Chinook
Ahtanum
Any suggestions?

Re: Crystal Rye IPA - choose my hops!
Not sure about the hops, but I can suggest you use 4 - 5% crystal rye malt. I've been using that much CaraRye with excellent results. 1% black malt goes nicely if you have it. I think crystal rye and cararye are the same.

Ta, I was wondering whether that was too much crystal rye. I do have some black malt as it happens.

I would go Chinook, then dry hop with Ahtanum. I know you said one hop, but 200g of hops always goes well

Re: Crystal Rye IPA - choose my hops!
Mashed in around 7:30 pm on 17th Feb. 36 litres (two more than I usually do). Brought the water up to 70deg.
Two fleeces this time - 68deg.

Temperature of the mash this morning was 49.5
Did a 60 minute boil, with 25g of Chinook in at 30 minutes, another 25g at 10 with 25g of Ahtanum.
Into the no-chill and brew finished before half nine.
Overnight is way more convenient!

Re: Crystal Rye IPA - choose my hops!
I made a beer with Maris Otter, 10% Crystal Rye and Chinook at 60 and 15 minutes for an IBU of about 40. It was good, very good.
Re: Crystal Rye IPA - choose my hops!
I hit my target of 1:051 spot on, and got 23 litres in the bucket for the first time without having to liquor back.
Re: Crystal Rye IPA - choose my hops!
Bottled last Sunday, the 8th March. I had let it ferment out for 14 days and dry hopped with about 30g of Ahtanum pellets for a week.
Tasted today, carbed enough after five days, the sediment settled really well in the bottle and I could pour a clear 490ml.
Tastes very nice....different to my normal pale ales. Very rich caramelly, kind of fruity from the rye, balanced out well bitterness. Aroma not as hoppy as I would have liked, in hindsight would have dry hopped with at least 50g of pellets.
Decision to chuck in the pellets rather than use a hop bag and me hop spider was okay.
All in all, in a few weeks this is going to be a nice one, not a session ale, but a rich livener in between the regular sinkers. I'll be giving some of these to workmates. Pic:

Looks fab. What is the type of tubing that you use to the chill cube? I could do with some!

Use silicone tube, platinum cured is the stuff you want.

I think it's silicon, I got it with a big pile of homebrew stuff in a car booter.
