Pretty much the first recipe I've come up with myself so looking for ideas or advice so I make some nice beer out of it!
Code: Select all
4.00 kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter (5.9 EBC) Grain 1 83.7 %
0.50 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (118.2 EBC) Grain 2 10.5 %
0.28 kg Roasted Barley (591.0 EBC) Grain 3 5.9 %
15.00 g Phoenix [11.50 %] - Boil 60.0 min Hop 4 18.0 IBUs
15.00 g Phoenix [11.50 %] - Boil 30.0 min Hop 5 13.8 IBUs
15.00 g Phoenix [11.50 %] - Boil 10.0 min Hop 7 6.5 IBUs
5.00 g Irish Moss (Boil 10.0 mins) Fining 6 -
15.00 g Phoenix [11.50 %] - Boil 1.0 min Hop 8 0.8 IBUs
Est Original Gravity: 1.051 SG Measured Original Gravity: 1.046 SG
Est Final Gravity: 1.011 SG Measured Final Gravity: 1.010 SG
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 5.2 % Actual Alcohol by Vol: 4.7 %
Bitterness: 39.0 IBUs Calories: 427.1 kcal/l Est Color: 37.0 EBC
What do you think this will come out like? It's the first time I've used Phoenix, I only have those and 100g Chinook at the moment so can swap some about if needed. What I'm looking for is something with a nice hop profile but not too bitter. I'm happy with the colour as I have a few light coloured ales in the garage so wanted something a little darker.
Yeast will be some that I have from a local brewery.
Thanks

Looks fine - not tried phoenix as a hop so hope you like it lol. Only thing I might add is I'm of the Seymour school of thought - and would sub a small amount of base malt for steel cut/ porridge oats for body and mouth feel - perhaps the -3.7% taking the base to 80% flat ?

I did forget to add the Torrified wheat to the recipe, so have added that in now. I've got about 150g so was going to add it all in.

I'd reduce or drop the roast barley
no palate, no patience.
Drinking - of course

think I added that wrong, it was only meant to be about 30g for colour, just realised the recipe shows 280g so a huge difference!
Will amend that

Made this last night, straight in the brew fridge and fermentation has started already.
Looked, smelled and tasted nice just from the sample jar so looking forward to the finished product.
Realised I didn't have any Irish moss, so assume it will still be pretty clear if I crash cool it after fermentation has finished?

Hi,
I brewed a similar beer recently with Phoenix hops. Turned out pretty good. A little bit reminiscent of Hobgoblin I thought.

Good luck with your brew.

My hops also came from Wibblers! Although I collect them my myself as I only live half hour away. Get my grain from there as well, as well as the yeast.
Really nice people to deal with, the chap I speak to when I collect my stuff is always up for a chat.

Nice one. Have used their yeast for my last three brews. Some good prices for hops too.
Cheers,

My LHBS charges up to £6 for hops, so I thought that was the norm until I found Wibblers and realised my LHBS are expensive.
Plus I don't have to pay delivery charges for 25kg of grain makes me a happy chappy
