100% munich ale
100% munich ale
Hi all,
I have a load of Munich male (type 1) malt that I bought with the intention of brewing a 100% munich altbier. Due to a lack of appropriate yeast and lagering time I am now considering using this malt for a 100% munich ale fermented with wyeast 1469 (West Yorkshire) slurry. I'm hoping this would give a good malty beer along the lines of (but probably a tad more malty than) Bath Ales gem.
Does anyone have any experience of brewing an all munich ale or suggestions?
Hop wise I have Mount Hood in stock which I'm considering using however would also welcome suggestions on a more appropriate hop.
Cheers
Dan

Where is the malt from? Germany? Then you are ok with a 100% Munich beer. If it is uk sourced it is too cloying to use in those proportions.

Re: 100% munich ale
Look up recipes for faketoberfest or fauxtoberfest or something like that. Should give you an idea for Munich% and what ale yeast to cheat with

I say go for it. Whatever the outcome its probably drinkable. Might be a bit sweet so maybe go large on the hops?

This. Definitely don't try it with the UK stuff. I can still taste the one I brewed...TheSumOfAllBeers wrote:Where is the malt from? Germany? Then you are ok with a 100% Munich beer. If it is uk sourced it is too cloying to use in those proportions.

Thanks for all the replies, I wish I had seen then all before I brewed today! I used some leftover fuggles for bittering plus EKG for flavour and and aroma to a total of 30ibus. Fingers crossed it turns out ok, the wyeast 1469 took my last beer to 1.009 so hopefully it will do the same to help cut the sweetness.
