Not made it but I really like it - always have a half when I see it on draught

The information on their website is annoying as [censored]

"
Optic Pale Ale Malt, Roast Barley.
Hops used are English grown Challenger, Fuggles & First Gold.
"

Then they also say "The sweet malt offsets the fruity bitterness of the Perle and Bramling Cross."

I'd fire them an email and ask them what gives

I'm sure the recipe is in Graham Wheeler's book

He's a fountain of knowledge isn't he? Can you tell me the result of the four thirty at Kempton Park?
Have been thinking about an old ale myself, never considered darkening it with roasted barley though. Would this gravity deserve a yeast starter? I'm guessing that it would be at its best around Christmas 2016?

Heh, heh.

You would definitely benefit from a yeast starter, or two packets/vials, something like that. You could get away with a regular pitch, but the yeast stress would probably lead to extra fruity esters and spicy phenols. That's desirable in some styles like German Hefeweizen, so it's up to you. I haven't been fortunate to taste Broughton Old Jock, is it mostly clean, or fruity and spicy?

As far as aging, it'll taste great in 6-8 weeks, which is when I usually start drinking my high-grav stuff, but it definitely keeps getting better for a year or two. That is, if it lasts that long, which it seldom does due to my lack of self-control. :)

Cheers!

Thanks, Seymour. I found it to be dark but not too heavy, the hops are there but not in your face if you get my meaning. Somewhere between Newcastle brown Ale and a standard IPA like Marstons Pedigree. I used to think I liked very hoppy beers, but of late I seem to be going for more malty and darker brews. This is a contender for our first AG attempt after christmas.

Thanks too seymore!
Me too on he hops Cully. I have plenty of hoppy ale in stock. Just fancy dark malty ones too. Also finding myself attracted to the classic Brit hops, challenger, fuggle and Golding's right now. I've had a summer of American 'c' hops and flavoursome antipodean fragrant ones. A pint of Theakstons Peculiar is more my taste right now. Maybe it's the weather.
The roast barley in the old jock is what interested me. I've a shedload of it in stock so am always looking for something different to do with it. I'm minded to do the malt bill only with Golding's and fugggles as I have no 1st gold. There's a notty yeast cake available once my brown ale finishes fermenting (more malty beer!).
