My TT Landlord Clone (99% there!)

Post by laithclark » Wed Nov 25, 2015 10:08 pm

The TT Landlord Clone must amongst the favourite recipes for any home brewer and it gets a lot of coverage in forums across the globe. As one of my favourite beers of all time I know why. I know there are lots of people that say it is not as good as it was but I still love it. I grew up not very far from the brewery so took its presence in local pubs for granted. Now I live in the Cotswolds that is no longer the case, although my frame of reference is bottles not cask!

So I have searched high and low and this is my 6th attempt at the classic clone brew. I think it's 99% there bar a few minor tweaks for v7!

Take a look and see what you think http://bit.ly/1Ndndsa

Nice one! It's a great beer, yours looks great. I'm taking notes. I have a keg of GW recipe TTL on the go right now. It's not at all right. The water is so soft here. Should probably have added more gypsum. G'luck!

Thanks for that! Give mine a go for comparison when you get around to it and see what you think. I have done GW's too

I have seen an analysis of the bottled beer that shows it to be biased to chloride, which is unusual for a Pale Ale I know but it might give some clues to its success. Have to say the bottled version is nothing like the cask conditioned but they never are.

Nice! Would you be up for sharing the Boltmaker recipe? Had more than a few pints of that in a local pub a few weeks back and it was rather nice. I actually prefer it to Landlord.

Hi Ben

I am just working on the feature for Bolt Maker likely to be up in the next few days, further work required on the malt base I think but the hop schedule is good. I do love Bolt Maker too it's great but I am benchmarking the bottle not cask alas!

Isn't Boltmaker just a renaming of TT Best Bitter that won champion beer soon after it had been renamed ?.

That's what I thought too FUBAR, I can't recall if there's a recipe for TT best/ bookmaker in the GW book. Is there?

I'm yet to try a Landlord clone that comes close? I hope you've cracked it...its such a simple beer on the surface but obviously it's something at the brewery that home brewers find difficult to replicate. ....I know they have their own spring for water which i thought must be the reason, but I'll also asume they now filter it. ..maybe someone will know if that's the case.
Theirs also a lot of recipes say that TT do a 2 hour boil this could also be significant for the way the beer seems to finish like the calodonian brewery allegedly burn the wort onto the kettle to get a malt toasted flavour on originally with coal and again they has a 2 hour boil also.

No doubt at all that the yeast is a huge, huge factor on the taste of TT .

Yes, Boltmaker used to be best bitter but got renamed after a pub. They had a competition to find a new name. I like it- a bit more interesting that "best bitter". Quite amusingly I had quite a few Boltmakers at our Christmas party (in the upstairs room of a local pub) until the barrel ran out. I ordered a beer on the way to the toilet and when I got back my beer was waiting but sure wasn't boltmaker. My friend said "the waiter says this is similar to Boltmaker". Similar my arse. They'd given me a pint of North London IPA which had been dry-hopped to within an inch of its life. About as far as you can get from a Yorkshire best as you can get! The only similarity was the ABV....
