My TT Bolt Maker Clone (v1) recipe

Post by laithclark » Sat Dec 05, 2015 8:59 pm

Following my TT Landlord Clone, the following day I brewed my first attempt at a TT Bolt Maker Clone or as I have named it, Red Cow Best Bitter. This v1 recipe still needs some work to get right. The good thing is the hop schedule is good but it is the malt that needs some further work/tweaking. Don't get me wrong this is a tasty Best Bitter already and will be drunk this Christmas and some bottles will become gifts for the family too!

This Clone is based on the bottled version of Bolt Maker rather than the cask version as alas I don't have a pub near me that sells it on draft!

Hi,
Looking at the colour difference and your recipe, I would be inclined to drop the mild malt and replace it with GP and replace the extra dark crystal with medium crystal (150EBC).
Maybe look at your water treatment to get the maltiness you are looking for.
Sounds pretty tasty as is though. Do like a nice bitter.

Cheers,

Listening to the Brewers they use some Amber Malt as well in the recipe at the award at the GBBF

Thanks Charliemartin and eguin for the input, it's all good.

I hadn't thought about the water as I only adjust as per Murphys analysis I had done a while ago with a profile to create good Pale Ales rather than brewery/location specific adjustment so I will look into that.
The malt base is an interesting one too, I have had a look at that film so may get some Amber Malt for the next run/adjustment but as Charliemartin says its quite tasty as it is and the Mild Malt/GP combo is a good one. I will keep you posted with developments

Cheers guys

I know this is an old thread but Boltmaker infrequently gets discussed on the homebrew forums and I think it is hands down one of the best bitters out there. At least that it is in a bottle. Sadly, I have not yet had it on cask. Does anybody have laithclark’s recipe that he talked about on this thread? Sadly his recipe links no longer work and I think his brewery business is no longer trading which is a shame as I’d liked to have ordered a few bottles.

You could try Graham Wheeler's recipe in Brew Your Own British Real Ale. His recipes are well respected. You may need to dig out a good yeast (GW never suggested one) and a good caramel (GW would use Black Malt instead).

And in place of caramel everyone in this thread is trying all sorts: Amber Malt, Mild Ale Malt, Dark Crystal, a kitchen sink ...

Thanks Peebee. I’m going to give my 6th attempt at a clone a go and this time use some Simpsons imperial and some amber malt (as well as an invert emulation inspired by your good self).
