has the gorse added colour too?ManseMasher wrote:Definitely there - I just hope it's not subliminal! Overall very pleased with the experiment so far, but the proof will be reports from Messrs Dads_Ale and McMullan, and yourself if you would like a bottle!

Re: Gorse flowers
Spotted some on my way back from work today... Pinned the location and will head back there this weekend with the bin lids in tow.

I'll nick a pair of leather gloves that I get for the wagon drivers at work. Job done.ManseMasher wrote:Decent gloves are a must!! 1/2 a carrier bag took nearly two hours, and a whole lot of cussin'......
Re: Gorse flowers
One week in. Bit of a pouring error so it is a tad cloudy, but nice head, and the smell is wonderful. Still got some way to go yet, but a happy chap!

Re: Gorse flowers
That looks like it'll be good
I've always loved the smell of the gorse growing on the cliffs around Bude - smells like surf wax. But when I've tasted the flowers to try to get an idea of the flavour a gorse wine would have, I've got more of a 'fresh picked pea/pea pod' flavour from them... which is also nice, but not worth the picking pricking (for me). I may revisit that judgement...

Re: Gorse flowers
Hmm. Citra hopped mushy peas. Interesting aroma for an ale.
Re: Gorse flowers
And here it is after two weeks....tastes lovely. The gorse has given it a very light floral aroma, head retention already very good.
Re: Gorse flowers
Looks fabulous that Manse.
Re: Gorse flowers
Couldn't resist any longer so the Gorse ale was opened earlier..
Great carbonation and absolutely superb golden colour (even SWMBO commented how nice the colour was).
I must say that I am not the best with aromas but I was getting a flowery/honey smell.
So to the tasting - Initial impression was a light summer ale with a citrus note and another underlying flavour that became more pronounced as the glass emptied. By the time I got to the bottom of the glass I was leaning towards a honey flavour coming through.
I am not the best at describing flavour but I will say that this is a great ale and one glass was not enough, this will draw you in to try a few more just to try and pin down the flavours.
Cheers Manse and thanks for the opportunity to try this one.
Going to have to go out and sniff some gorse flowers now

Re: Gorse flowers
Thank you mate, glad it was ok. I gave a taster bottle to a local commercial brewer. His response - 'On the gorse ale - lovely fruity floral smell. Good malty taste with great hoppy flavours and a bitter finish. Thought was very refreshing'.
Between Dads_Ale, that and the response I've had from various other tasters (including the die-hard 'Harpers' in my local), I will do this again!
