ok i want to do a nice, strong, deep, dark, warming ale for christmas any ideas?

oh and not a stout, cheers :D

The last
1 JohnBull Executive + HeadCracker = 40 pints 9/10 7.5% ABV
Re-calculated it's actually more in the 8% range.

Using Muntons Gold yeast from headcracker. Add sugar to prime in barrel and. If done mid to late November will be prime for christmas.

ltp are you extract or all-grain?

Depends on how far you want to go I guess but anything too big won't be ready in time for christmas I'm thinking. What about the Old Rambler recipe (Vossy's done this one I think), that's just over 7%.
My tweaked Old Peculier is tasting very nice already after 2 weeks and comes in at just under 7%, or here's a BIG quick-drinker from durden park, looks utterly bonkers: :shock:

Sixpenny Ale (1796) Bass
A quick drinking strong ale for the impatient.
Mature for 2-3 months.

Size: 23 L
Efficiency: 70.0%

Original Gravity: 1.109
Terminal Gravity: 1.027
Alcohol: 10.93% :out
Bitterness: 46.74

Ingredients:
12 kg Maris Otter Pale
86 g Fuggle (5%) - added during boil, boiled 90 min

Go on... i dare you :lol:

I'm all grain (and a little bit of beer belly :D )

I think that sixpenny ales is a tad too strong for my tastes and balance!

I've seen a nice looking dark ruby mild in BYORAAH so think i might try that and its 6% too :D

cheers for ideas, i know i'll have to brew a bit more in advance next year so i can get a good one!

Im going to do a big belgian beer for christmas, its either going to be the strong dark recipe that oblivous posted a while ago or a clone of westmalle tripel, or i might even do both, either way i need to get my finger out :D

I'm doing a 'robust' porter and a big IPA for christmas. Getting them on this week and ageing them for a couple of months.

If it's Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild then it's a good choice made this beer many a time excelent brew

Mix,

Bitter Ted has a Mr Harry recipe, not sure that he brewed it though -

I brewed a version. Had a sneaky taste when I bottled - initially it seemed a touch to nutty and not malty enough but still an awfully tasty drop.

Using the proper yeast (such as Wyeast 1968) should give you the maltiness. I can't claim to be terribly familar with Mr Harry as I have only supped it a few times (once at the brewery). It is Fullers seasonal for October of this year.

I am going for the Beers of the World Christmas beer, and the Bavarian pilsner. These will be my christmas beers.

I was going to do the other Brewferm Christmas beer, but they ran out, and can't get any more.

I will also (hopefully) have some Smugglers left over as well......although I ran out of bottles last night whilst bottling it :shock: ....so I drank the remaining 4 pints of very young and oddly flavoured beer, but the way I see it, is if its drinkable now its gonna be great in a month or so. :D

Yeah ok none of these are AG brews, but i thought I would see what comments I get as to the two beers I have picked for Xmas

Hi lou,

Nice beer that Sarah Hughes Mild. I've brewed it before and it really got me thinking about how mild has changed.

Bear in mind though the low hop rate of a mild will fade more if you're maturing for a while. Ok of course if you're a fan of malty beers. Personally I'd up the hops to account for the loss and maybe add a tiny amount of chocolate malt as well.

If I ever get my brewing equipment up and running I might brew something similar for Christmas. Thanks for the idea :D
