Using up American hops

Post by paulindevon » Sun Apr 24, 2016 4:13 pm

I recently made a Sharps APA clone for a friend which used citra, aurora, cascade & simcoe. Turned out right nice if a little too grapefruity for me, but I have 35, 85, 85 & 50g of leftovers respectively. Also a fair size bag of caramalt and wheat malt. I'm on my 6th brew so I don't really feel confident enough to stray away from a recipe yet. I would love any suggestions as to how to use up the leftovers.

Hi Steve. That's the correct recipe for 23l. The slightly odd figures are my adjustments for 25l. My water volumes are for 25l. Can't say how close it is to the Sharps as I've never tried it, but it is certainly very tasty. You can tell it's the citra that gives the grapefruit just by smelling the hops, hence the change to the schedule for dry hopping

Crikey. Wouldn't say no ! If you are sure you can spare it that would be fab. I've not tried it before so is there anything that you would recommend ?

I would use the Citra in a modest golden ale of your choosing, simply replace the recipe's hops with Citra.

Likewise, pick a proven Mild Ale recipe and replace the hops with your Simcoe a great resiny kick.

Cascade you can't go wrong in any Americanized pale ale recipe.

Cheers!

Cheers Seymour
I like the mild idea. Would never have thought of that.
