SMaSH - Topaz or Motueka?

Post by HopWroester » Fri May 13, 2016 11:39 pm

Panning a SMaSH brew this weekend, any one used either Topaz or Motueka
hops?

Topaz is 15% AA
Motueka is 8% AA

I can vouch for Motueka, top hop, great on its own. Not yet used Topaz.

I'm thinking of this hop shedule

30g@60
20g@10
20g@dry hop

comes in at 42 IBU.

I would probably use a different hop for bittering, depends what you've got, but the Topaz would probably work. I'd use more late hops too, I like a good amount of hop flavour and aroma, without going crazy. Motueka is tasty, but not a big, in your face hop. Depends what you want of course, lots of ways to skin a SMaSH.

Maybe 15-20g Topaz at 60, 30g Motueka at 10 and 30g Motueka dry. About 35 - 45 IBUs depending on the amount of Topaz. That's only 75-80g hops in total, about 3g per litre, which is not heavy. I often end up at around 5g per litre

I've got 200g of cascade and 500g of summet,

Used Cascade loads lately and a little bored of it!

Never used summet, this works out about 68IBU, might drop the summet to 15g

this is the plan

the oats seem to add some nice mouth feel to my beers, or just my taste buds are shot

so guess not really a SMaSH!

I would aim for 35-40 IBUs, so the bitterness doesn't overpower the Motueka. Reduce the Summit and shift 20g Motueka from 10 to 0 mins.

That looks good, 46 IBUs isn't OTT. Good luck.
