American Brown Ale for the Autumn/Winter

Post by Monkeybrew » Sun Jun 12, 2016 8:19 pm

I'm looking to use up some different malts and hops in this brew, so I can't really change too much, but I'm after any feedback on this recipe. I'm hoping for a malty brown beer with good hop flavour and aroma

Aiming to brew this in August, so I'm hoping that it should be good by late Autumn / early Winter. I've intentionally gone heavy with the late hops, as I'm allowing for a reasonable length of bottle conditioning time.

Be aware that M-44 can be a bit slow to start. It was the one time that I used it; got me a little worried. The beer turned out good.
I'm just here for the beer.

Yeah, I experienced this with M44, the first time that I used it in a strong kit based IPA, but I used it recently in my AG NZ Wheat Beer, and it took off really well.

I'm thinking that 1 x rehydrated sachet will be sufficient in this brew?

I think the grain bill looks perfect. I'd be tempted to make it less bitter, though; 30 IBU max. I tried a brown ale recently that I thought was too bitter and was verging on a porter. But then it's your beer so go for it. Excellent late hops, btw. Inspired!

How uncanny, I double checked the guidelines again today and thought exactly the same about my 35 IBU's 8)

30 IBU it is then :)

I wouldn't shy away from the IBU with this one- brewed Moose Drool at 28 and it could have been higher without being OTT.
