Munich Smash

Post by alix101 » Fri Nov 04, 2016 8:32 am

OK, going to get another sneaky brew on today Sneaky as I can't be arsed to go to work..
I haven't made any starter yet so my liquid yeast is for another day. I've got lots of 05 but I think I'm going to use Wilkos yeast (Notts)
to brew a Munich smash.
I've considered making a hop bomb but I think it might be nice to have something mellow with some hop finish so I'm thinking Northern Brewer.
Any thoughts ?
100% Munich
Northern Brewer ?
Notts....

It will work. What source is your Munich? U.K. Malting or German? U.K. Sourced can be very sweet at 100% grist. Mash low or don't be shy with the IBU

Sounds good. Moderately hopped with something American? Cascade?

Nice American amber ale.

What ebc is this going to come out at?

Can't some Munich have low diastatic power depending on the source? Pretty sure Muntons only recommend 20% of grist.

The brew is on ....
The malt is weyermann got an entire sack to get through which is why I wanted to try a smash I'm doing a 5 step mash to try and get a better attenuation.

It's calculated to be 20.5

German Munich malt should be 100% diastatic. If in doubt run the numbers on the bag through some research. If it's close or you doubt you can fully convert, add half a kilo of pale to get your enzymes up.
