Isn't there a shortage of ripe pumpkins where you are?

Our squashes are a disaster this year!

They'll keep for several months if handled carefully, kept dry and cool, and uncut. Handle them very carefully if you want them to keep, unfortunately the supermaket ones tend to be knocked about a bit and do not keep so good - use them within a few weeks if possible.

Pumpkins and many other squashes air dry very well, and will easily keep until next years crop when dried.

i think they are just struggling with getting them ripe for the big pumpkin buying time of year ie halloween.
You could do an authentic halloween brew and make a turnip beer :D since thats what the irish who took the halloween tradition over to the states would have used as the lanterns back on the old sod (thats what we made them out of as when i was a kid also).
Pumpkins are simply a substitute for good old fashioned turnips which weren't readily available in america.

DaaB wrote:That's all well and good but hollowing out a Turnip is a sod, and turnip soup tastes crap
Its not only a sod, its bloody lethal, how i survived childhood with all my fingers intact i'll never now.
After the potato famine i'd guess the single biggest killer in ireland would have been turnip carving

Turnips a small ickle things,I take my hat off to you.I made them out of swedes when I was a nipper and that was hard enough and they were a lot bigger.

Hang on a min do you call a swede a turnip? as we call a turnip a swede.

Some of the best result I have heard is to bake them before mashing them, this will help produce some nice flavors

Here is a link to the Jamil Show spice beer edition, where they talk about pumpkin beer

We used to make Turnip lanterns when I was a bairn too! A far superior lantern making option than the pumpkin in my view

RE Pumpkin Beer - yep, they have a special batch of it every year at the Alloa Octoberfest (end of this month) called Ale O'Ween - its magnificent! Made by the Bridge of Allan Brewery if memory serves... but memory post beer fest is always somewhat hazy to say the least!

There are 100 beers on this year, and I find it impossible to order a half... yet will want to try a significant proportion of those on offer... oh... bugger!

(Half pints look silly in my paws due to issues of scale)
