ok my last two brews here. what do you think?
stout for november:
5kg pale
250g choc
250g roast barley
250g crystal
mash 90min 66c
boil 90 min.
copper hops 75g (old) fuggles
late hops(15min from end) 25g goldings
gave me 25-26 litres bang on 1.050
pitched with plenty of s-04 rehydrated but slow start (the pack is getting on a bit i'm loathe to throw away half of a 500g pack though)
bubbling away nicely since last week.
yesterdays brew just made up on the hoof:
5.5kg pale
600g crystal
mash temp 65c 60min
boil 60 min
copper hops 75g goldings
late hops 50g goldings
surprisingly low og of 1.035 roughly 24 litres but no markings on the glass carboy. pitched with s-04 again.
first try at treating the water with crs and trial and error additions to the mash to get 5.2

what?
nothing?
anyway,
the first is still bubbling away nicely but the second didn't want to go at all even with a second dosing of so4
soooo
what's lying around? s23 hmmmm
what the hell in go two sachets of s23 it's cool enough where it is(about 17) so we'll see what it turns out like. starting to bubble away quietly so just wait and see.

Have you taken a hydro reading on the second one, S04 could easily have fermented a 1035 brew out when you weren't lookingbrewsters millionths wrote:what?

Maybe you could have let it mash for for 90 mins like the first brew.
BTW i like the look of the first one.

cheers delboy.
naah it definitely didn't get going at all, but with the s23 it has started so a bit of a sweet dark lager type affair i reckon.
the first one is an attempt at a stout hopefully it will be readyin time for the november meeting of the north hampshire group. get some opinions from people who know.
i'll keep you posted on how they turn out.
