Hop House 13

Post by brewbrew » Sun May 31, 2020 2:37 pm

I'm not normally a lover of mass marketed lager - but I seem to like Hop House 13.

I can't find any clones - I think it has some fruity hops and the maltiness is quite pronounced.

Does anyone have experience of a clone or advice on how they get that malty balance?

Cheers,

BB

Per the website :
"5%...Hop House 13 is a distinctive golden lager that is brewed with Guinness yeast, Irish barley and the best of hops from both Australia and USA – Galaxy, Topaz, (AUS) and Mosaic (USA). It has a sweet fruity aroma, with hints of Apricot and Peach, and subtle malt notes breaking through. Hop House 13 is full flavoured while still being crisp and hoppy with a refreshing clean finish."

ASDA are a bit more helpful on the grist : "Contains: Barley..Oats, Rye, Wheat...
Hop House 13 is brewed with the famous Guinness yeast strain using a lower temperature fermentation profile and lager processing techniques. Also, it's double hopped meaning that hops are added at two separate points in the process.
"

Manitoba Liquor Mart says it's 21 IBU

So it's more like a restrained APA, it's one of the reasons why Galaxy is so hard to come by...

The above should be enough to get you started though.

Hmm - it looks like that ASDA allergen statement should be read with "or"s rather than "and"s, most other sources put barley as the only allergen.

Thanks for this - oats in a pale beer sounds like a challenge.

I rather like it myself but I've never seen a clone recipe :(

I can really taste the Guinness yeast in it. That's something you're going to struggle to recreate.

WLP004 or Wyeast 1084 would be the obvious choices, although homebrew single strains are never quite the same as production yeast.
