QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ Feb 1 2006, 08:45 PM)RR...there is a section in the Graham Wheeler Home Brewing book which says words to the effect of, ion exchange filters exchange calcium ions for sodium ions

Wheeler has yet again got his knickers in a twist.

The type of resin used within the filter will dictate how the resin works. Resins can be used in isolation or alongside other resins, to get a number of effects.

The resin Wheeler is describing is more akin to the one used in water softeners, not the resin used in jug water filters. That why you add salt to a water softener to regenerate the resin.

The resin used in jug filters is not the same. This can easily be proven by tasting the water taken straight from the jug – is it salty?, No? of course not.. (if it is salty and yellow of course…that’s another story!!)

Just thought I’d clear that up to save anyone worrying..
