Okay, Ozzy. So, where were we ....?

I was knocking up those two kits. I'd put the malt powder in the two FV's. Then, I'd emptied the tin into the first one. Kettle was boiling for the second kit and I stuck the hose in the jerry can .....

Jerry got to the right mark. So, I lugged it over and poured it into the first FV. Just short of four gallons of water.

 WTF have I just done??? There was No Crushie in that revolting water!

That's when time stood still, as I tried to remember, and work through all the theoretical crap one sees written about knocking up a kit.

I'd, potentially, just dumped a load of chloramines into my malts? F**ked beer, surely?

This is why we slavishly fret about how well we rinse our bleach sanitised FV's in the first place, yeah? Bleach f**ks beer!

What was I to do? I prepared a crushie and slung it in. Minutes after the bleach hit the malt.

Made the next one, properly. Dunked their heaters in and set them to warm up. That night, I chucked their yeasts in. And came here to make a panicked post about, " What Have I Done?! "

Week later, I got sh!t faced on the gorgeous contents of that FV!

So, what might we extrapolate from all this?

Way I see it is that the sh!t in my tap water has No Effect on Malts. But, then; I never did really think it did.

Timing: How many times do we read stuff like; " Oh, ye must put the crushie in the water, then let it stand ten minutes / half an hour / over f**king night to work. " ?

I've always advocated simply slinging the crushie into the JC and hosing the water in on top of it. Four gallon mark? Ye good to go! F**k standing about, scratching ye balls, while it " Works ".

Chlorine effects Yeast. Not malts. Is this not so ....? (Genuine question) Either way; A crushie knocks chlorine on the head. Boosh! Half an hour doesn't come into it. That's what I reckon.

Further; I'd look askance at some of the continuing mentality about, " Ooooh! Well, if ye use bleach solution to sanitise? Then ye Must rinse ye gear for at least half an hour, of course! "

I sanitise my FV's with a handful of solution made of about a mug of thin bleach in a couple or so gallons of water. Quick hose out and I'm good to go.

Before that yeast even Sees that FV, there's four gallons of water diluting any residue! This is chlorine, people. Not f**king Strychnine! Relax a little!

What ye reckon ....?

Nooooo!!! Ye've completely missed the point, look. What I'm trying to underline is how chlorine doesn't effect Malts. It's only a hazard once the Yeast gets in there. It'll f**k ye yeast right up.

I wouldn't let my (un crushie treated) water near my yeast.

So, given that ~ I'd imagine ~ most people don't pitch their yeast till a considerable time after stirring their malt; What's the big thing about leaving the malt solution + crushie to stand? Crushie kills the bleach straight away. Job done. Chuck ye yeast in at any point there after.

Looking at it from the other side, for extra clarity? We don't need to add the crushie to the water we add to the malts, in the FV. We could chuck the crushie into the FV, before or after the stir. As long as it goes in a minute before we pitch the yeast.

With me now? :|

I do in fact see your line of thinking. I just don't agree with it. You should treat your water first with the Campden tablet before adding your malts or you run the risk of creating Chlorophenols which will give you off flavours. [-X

Didn't though, did it? :=P I wonder how many people would have thought; " Oh no! Now I'll have chlorophenols! I'd might as well chuck this malt away  "

Little tuppence. Made kit up other day. Not Ditch's but will illustrate point....was the coopers APA. Method much same. Topped upto 5 gall with Tap Water. Untreated!! No campdens but I did have some sodium met powder. Sprinkled a little on froth plus some nutrient. Got the 24 volt out. Big whizz up. Pie tched the yeast. Next day the lid is domed, krausen trying to climb out. Can only conclude that the sod met killed off any chlrination, and the coopers yeast, a mixed lager/ale Monkeybrew tells me, is an animal!!

How do you get it to 5 gallons without the foam going over the top of the FV? I generally brew to 20 litres and the foam's right to the top of the FV...

Fish Tank Heater Pay Dirt!!!
I was in town, the other week and, being down to one heater and thus, single handedly keeping the Polish f**king economy afloat, I Knew it was time for action.

I'd spotted that they had a heater, in the Creameries dwindling stocks of pet sh!t. I went for it.

That's when I saw it! Three Year f**king Guarantee!!! F**king What?! Grab!!!

It's a Fluval. Now, while I've had long, and happy, experience of their excellent Filters, I'm new to this heater. But, so f**king what?!I have the reciept salted away. No Way is this bitch gonna bend the universal laws and last a year or more!

But, the minute This f**ker goes tits up? I'm covered!

Boys....? Buy Fluval!!!!!

Hi Ditch, I hope you don't mind but I'm going to share the recipe in our CAMRA newsletter. I'm trying to get more stout into the world. :)
Southern Brewing

FV 1 (5 gallon): Nothing
FV 2 (5 gallon): Nothing

Commercial: More booze than some local pubs.
