" Ditch's Stout " Master Class .....
Re: " Ditch's Stout " Master Class .....
What's all this about five minutes to drain out a tin?
Open warmed tin, turn it upside down, allow majority to fall out, turn it the right way up (careful that the stringy bits of malt hanging down come back into the tin not down the edge); fill tin with boiling water, stir, tip back in the FV, job done.
Bollocks to standing there 5 minutes; most of it is out in 30 seconds; the rest comes out in the boiling water.

Right there. I only have a dinky little, one litre hot water tank. It must take at least that much to cover my two tins. Net result is that the 'Hot water bath' I'm trying to soak them in simply isn't that hot.Exiled Bradfordian wrote:What's all this about five minutes to drain out a tin?
Open warmed tin .....
" Bollocks to standing there 5 minutes " indeed then. I'll hang the tin from my mole grips, next time. Go and do something more productive with my time as the thick gloop drains.
Re: " Ditch's Stout " Master Class .....
My hot water tank is pish too. I just cover the tins of extract in boiling water from the kettle to soften the extract.
Good luck with the mole grips.

Hell, yeah!!!
This has made my life so sweet! I just up ended the tin. Snapped the grips onto it and walked away!
Sorry but, You Tube direct links don't work for me. Click this: http://youtu.be/Iz6v1nUyvNI
While that was draining itself out, I was on the other side of the room; Cutting up Crushies and filling Jerry Cans! F**king brilliant!

Believe it or not, mate; I genuinely reckon that's one of the best things I've come up with!
Incidentally; I just happen to have come across a you tube film of an old mate of mine knocking up a kit. F**king hell! I was groaning. Then screaming at the screen; " No! Nooo!!! For f**k sake, Matt! Ye doing it all f**king wrong!!! "
I must have a word with him some time .....

Tony; Glad ye enjoying it, mate
I only wish I could bring my keg in here, to be honest. Averages about 65 in here. Brassic, in there. It's like supping a pint of the Baltic!

Discovered this thread when asking a question elsewhere. Had to give it a go.
Yeast went in at 7am Sunday & aquarium heater had already warmed the mixture to 22c.
Took off after 24 hours, escaping the vessel as anticipated. 84 hrs later its finishing up.
Not going to barrel it till Fri/Sat but nicked a sneaky taste and it already tastes fantastic.
Thanks Ditch & to the poster that initially linked me to this. I hate Christmas but I think this may put a smile on my face over the next few weeks.

Good man, Surfer! Glad ye liking what ye finding.
One bit of advice I'd pass on, at this time of year? I'd much rather serve my stuff from a BK in here with me. This room's kept warm (Well, 66F is roasty, compared to the frozen hell that I have to keep my stuff in)
Guinness rep's would Love that walk in freezer. But, I can't stand how they force us to drink Guinness. Freezing cold so it sears the throat in one racing, flavourless, almost painful swallow.
Remember; You had a sample from a heated FV. Keg it and leave it in the cold? It'll loose so much character ye'll be bitterly disappointed.
Another little project for Ditch to contemplate, maybe? Getting a hay rack bolted to a wall, in here, to hold a BK safely. Else find a way of keeping the BK, out there, above freezing.
It's no f**king picnic for me, having to constantly dash out there either. Getting to appreciate my creature comforts now.

Another hater of the Guinness Extra Cold. I'm with you bro. What gets my goat even more is when they have both but serve you Extra Cold even though you didn't ask for it!
Wetherspoons is the worst. They only have Extra Cold!

I have to say that, from doing a stint behind a bar, that there is no difference between regular freezing and "Extra-Cold". At least in the pub I worked at, the lines all came through the same python, through the same chillers and came out next to one another. It's all the same freezing crap.
Southern Brewing
FV 1 (5 gallon): Nothing
FV 2 (5 gallon): Nothing
Commercial: More booze than some local pubs.
Re: " Ditch's Stout " Master Class .....
Maybe you're right CJR. Maybe I'll do an experiment and next time I'm in a pub that sells both Guinness and Guinness Extra Cold I'll order both and see if one's colder than the other.
Then again I probably won't. If you see me drinking Guinness, it probably means I'd rather be somewhere else!

How they want it m8 - means people slavishly consume without being confronted by anything resembling flavour.... and most of today's drinkers wouldn't be able to handle a proper malty stout - they struggle with hops !Ditch wrote:Guinness rep's would Love that walk in freezer. Re: " Ditch's Stout " Master Class .....
So tonight was cheeky taster night...my excuse was to relieve some pressure out the keg
LOL
Beer was sat at 6c...so probably a little cold..however i supped it slowly and it did improve once up around 10c or so.
Coopers kit, short brewed at 22c to 20L, 750g DME (dark), 250g demerara sugar, 1lb of dark treacle, keg primed with 100g honey which I pasteurised at 80c in 200ml of water. Only bad point is mouth feel is a little thin...so next time more DME (done one at 1KG also which I still thought was thin so 1.5KG going in next time) and I will add 454g of honey into the ferment (the wife picked up the honey tones and liked it so I will push this out a little more)...I may drop the sugar however.
Now the good points, its young in the keg, already its superb, pushed it thru a sparkler to cream it up and knock back the carbonation...very moreish. Came out at 5.5% and it hits home quickly, actually feels like a 7.5%er it hits that fast LOL, I may have to sup this in halves not pints
Ditch you are a seriously bad influence
I have 2 more tins here waiting to be brewed, wife thinks im mad!
Cheers!!!!
