Adapted Kit Recipes.
Re: Adapted Kit Recipes.
I've just started a Youngs Harvest Yorkie Bitter kit with the addition of 1Kg Demerera sugar, approx 200g fresh root ginger and 2 tea spoons dry powdered ginger. Bubbling away nicely through the airlock which has a gorgeous gingery aroma if I get a good whiff.
Has anyone tried to make a gingery pint like this before. How much ginger did you use compared to my attempt? Have I used too much or too little?

Know what you mean about it tasting very good early on, I had my first a week after bottling and it was gorgeous, although if you can keep a bottle back for 20+ weeks then you'll be in second heaven, I know I was.
Closest thing quality-wise to a two can kit I've managed from a single can kit that. I think I'll get one of these Porters on and conditioning in time for Christmas

I'm really pleased you all seemed to like my recipe, and for you guys to adapt and develop it further is great stuff. I wasn't sure if was going to do any more kits, but I might have to give the Geordie Mild one last outing...

I've started moving towards the dark side with extract brews, and I'm starting to get the kit together for AG but I think I will get another of these on for Christmas, was thinking it might be nice with some festive additives maybe.barl_fire wrote: That's looking fantastic!

Have to say this knocks spots of my coopers stout, but then that was my first brew and i probably did some really bad things to it!

I got the 'Dark Lager/Dunkel' experiment in the FV last night....
1 can Coopers Dark Ale Kit
1 Kilo Beer kit enhancer (yes, I know-using up what I have in the cupboard) :lol
500g LDME
35g Saaz hops steeped in 'french press' coffee maker for 30 mins
Brewferm Genuine lager yeast starter
Brew length 25 litres
OG: 1044
Target gravity 1008-1010
Pitched yeast at 20C at 19.30 10/03/10
By this morning the air lock was bubling away quite nicely... the temp had dropped to 16C
I anticipate that the temp will be below 15C by 19.00 tonight (so in ideal temp range within 24 hours)
Pleanty of active yeast went into the FV so I anticpate a quick(ish - for a lager yeast anyway) and clean ferment
I will post updates as we go!
Slainte!
I've been trawling through old posts looking for some inspiration. This sounds like it would be right up my street. I also have a Coop's Dark Kit waiting.
How did this turn out ?

Re: Adapted Kit Recipes.
After all those stories about wheat beer, I decided to improvise with what I had in my garage:
Can of Brewferm Tarwebier (15l kit)
Can of Coopers Wheat Malt Extract (1.5Kg)
40g blood orange peals (fresh from oranges - took 2 smallish oranges to get them) - 15min boil with hops
5g Coriander powder - 15min boil with hops
15g Hopsteiner's Hersbrucker pellets - 15min boil
15g Hopsteiner's Hallertau Tradition leaves - 5min boil
Brewferm kit yeast
mixed to 22l - idea to end up with 40x0.5l bottles = 2 crates + something to "test drive" while it matures.
OG 1.043
wort tasted very gentle - could feel bits of oats, honey, very slight "spicy" aromas and gentle hoppy linger. I think it will be great after that sweetness will be gone with the yeast
Bubbling away vigorously now!
*edited 03.10.2010
bottled 18.09.2010, cleared very fast in bottles and was drinkable and very tasty 10 days after bottling already!
tastes fantastic - very mild and nice drink with a light hint of spices in the aroma and finish, my best beer so far.
If you are looking for hoegarden clone, this is NOT it because its much milder on the spicy end and not so sour, tho I presume if you double spice amount, it might come close.
Definitely worth a try if you are looking to tinker with yout Brewferm kit!

Re: Adapted Kit Recipes.
Hi all.
I have just put a fixby gold on with a cascade hop tea added as the tea bag supplied smelt stale.
This is now smelling lovely and fermenting nicely.
Any tips ? Should i dry hop it in say 7 days once it has calmed down and if so with what ?
I have cascade,fuggles,target,challenger,goldings available.
Also i have a norfolk nog to put on.
Any ideas for tweeks.
As you can see this is my first venture into kit mod-ing so i will be very greatful.
Kind regards Dean

Re: Adapted Kit Recipes.
I've ordered a St. Peter's Ruby Red with the yeast nutrient as tipped on here.
Any other additives I could chuck in to enhance it, or is it a good enough kit already?
It's my 1st - you will always remember your 1st & I want it to be decent, or better.

Can you split into 2 secondaries and do 1 with extra hops and 1 as per kit?
Cheers

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you (must have missed the thread)

It turned out pretty good to be honest, however I like my lagers a little more bitter than this turned out to be so if I did it again I' make it up to the 22-23 mark...
I did seem to take an age to carbonate properly, but other than that no real issues
Give it a go!

Guy

Re: Adapted Kit Recipes.
Interesting, I did this a couple of weeks ago. I made a hop tea from Cascade (AA 7.6%) and I am hoping it has bittered up a bit. I did 23 litres.
I too prefer some refreshing bitterness. First taste is good. Time will tell.
Cheers.

Re: Adapted Kit Recipes.
Hi again chaps.
Just been down to the local brew shop and they had 2 brupack stout kits that were out of date.
£5 each so i snapped them up.
I have cascade, fuggles, target, challenger, goldings and some lovely hops from the garden that i have dried so anyone want to give me an idea for a mod as the hop bags supplied smell old and stale so i would like to replace with a fresh blast of hops.
Regards Dean.

Re: Adapted Kit Recipes.
I'm currently drinking a Coopers Australian Pale Ale made up with.....
1.7kg tin of Light LME
500g Brew Enhancer 1
On day 4 of fermentation I put 40g of Fuggles hop pellets in to a mug of boiling water and steeped for 20 minutes then added to the brew.
OG 1052 - FG 1012
Bottled up with 80g of cane sugar for secondary
2 weeks conditioning and its a very tasty pint, Took it away from the lager type of taste if brewed as per instructions on the tin to a proper ale with nice bittering.

Re: Adapted Kit Recipes.
The mention of the dreaded Wherry made me think of the following idea:
I have some (just) out of date Brupaks Amber LME 1.5kg, pick up half price from the HBS. I thought that added to one can of the Wherry kit it might make an acceptable brew.
Probably more malty and dark than a conventional Wherry so perhaps with some extra hops to even it out.
Hows that sound?
