Sorry for the delay, just spotted this. oops.

IIRC, it was over a year ago, I used a standard domestic saucepan - maybe 5 litres at most. In hindsight I would almost definitely have got better results using some of the wort rather than plain water, but this was my first experiment with hops and I didn't know any better at the time.
Fermentables would have been the standard recommendation for a Coopers kit, 1kg of their Beer Kit Enhancer.

I boiled up a muslin bag & a bit of string for 15 minutes for the dry-hopping, added the hops & sterilised shot glass to this, tied it up & tied it to the FV handle, pulled it out after 4 days if i remember correctly.

It was a cracking brew as it turned out, but experimenting with hops, and the resulting beer, sent me down the AG route. I've not done a kit since. I can mostly now be found in the Brew In A Bag section...

Anyone got a simple modification using Wherry to try as a first timer going outside the straight kit process?

I wouldn't bother adapting a Wherry - it's a great kit as it stands.
Try playing with a cheaper 1 can kit, say one of the wilko's ones for example - that's my advice for what it's worth.

However if the Wherry is all you have and your are determined to do something different with it, how about trying it with a different yeast strain? Danstar Windsor is a dry yeast (keeping things simple) that can develop very different flavours to the generic ale yeast that the Wherry comes with. Just an idea

I've got a couple of kits and a few ingredients, I'd appreciate any input anyone has on what I could do with them? I've created a page here;

Hi folks,

Was wondering if anyone could help me decide how to adapt a kit to make it taste like Punk IPA. Was thinking of getting the better brew ipa but don't know if there is a better kit to use..

Thanks in advance.

Well, heres the Brewdog analysis
http://www.brewdog.com/media/downloads/ ... sheets.pdf

ABV:6%
OG:1052
IBU’s:65
Malts:Marris Otter Extra Pale Malt
Hops:Chinook, Crystal, Motoeka
Twist:Hopped with bucket loads of our favourite hops

Yeast used by Bredog is generally WLP007 and this will be key to getting the correct flavours.

I raised Brewferm Gold up to 5 Gallons using the following, and added some vanilla.
This Beer was fantastic, and people likened it to Innes & Gunn. The beer had the best body I've ever got with just extract.
Only needs a primary. I put a gallon and the secondary and there was no difference whatsoever. Ages to have a great wee head, perhaps failed to at first due to the vanilla extract

Ingredients:
Brewferm Gold (1.5kg LME kit)
Brewferm Yeast (from above kit - really nice in the final beer)
700g Caster Sugar
500g Munton's Medium DME
500g Munton's Wheat DME
28g Vanilla Extract (added right before bottling)

I've no idea how much I carbonated but it was relatively bubbly.

OK then, Just about to try this

Coopers Australian Real Ale
2 Jars Holland and barret malt, 1 jar honey 1 bottle Tate and Lyle golden Syrup for the fermentables
15g Magnum steeped for 20 min hop tea

I'll let it ferment and leave for 14 days then dry hop with
20g Perle
20g Cascade
For 7 days, rack to bottling bucket with 90g sugar to bulk prime then bottle

Lets see what happens, the kit is from the Tesco gold rush of 2012
Im hoping for something like a Sierra Nevada as thats the hops used in it, if not in the ball park then maybe the car park of the ball park

I would have thought that you will need alot more cascade if you're aiming for an SNPA clone.

I've seen a few AG recipes on here that use 30g in the last 10mins of boiling and then 70g steeped for 30mins.

OK, cheers mate, could always throw a bit more in :D

Its not like a straight clone Im going for, I've read somewhere tonight that SN dont actually dry hop the PA so what Im doing will probably give it a whole different charachter anyway.

Also someone told me to add no more than 60g total hops? (23l length)

Cheers

My last Pale ale extract recipe was:

2 tins of Cheap Brewsmater LME
100g malted wheat grains mashed @ 67c for 30 mins
300g crystal malt grains mashed @ 67c for 30 mins
10g Apollo 60 min boil
25g Apollo 20 min steep
65g Apollo dry hop
21l brewlength & a coopers APA yeast

Lovely flavours and aroma's from the hops, nice bittering and a great head from the wheat addition.

Apollo hops 16.7% AA

I brewed a 10.5L BIAB NZ Cascade Pale Ale that's got 70g of hops in it ;-)

It's very hop forward, but I love it!
