Its now possible to get low cost isomerized hop extract sachets: a sachet that adds 20 IBU to a 23 litre batch of beer. So it would be very easy to arrive at any IBU you want (e.g. 30 IBU = 1.5 sachets, etc). If you use a small syringe, you could probably get accuracy down to a couple of IBUs.
So here's the question: how's about building your own beer kit? Along the following lines:
- 3 Kg unhopped LME,
- 4 iso hop sachets (thats up to 80 IBU . .. . is that high enough?),
- a selection of up to a total of 100 grams of any combination of any 4 pellets, a fine mesh nylon hop bag for them, and
- a choice of any Fermentis yeast.
The advantage would be flexibility, but I wonder if brewers would really want that? Do you think it would really be possible to "design" your own beer . . . . as in visualize what you want, and then select the appropriate IBUs and dry hop profile?
Designing You Own Beerkit ?
Re: Designing You Own Beerkit ?
This is an excellent idea (price depending)
You would really have to offer the profiles of each hop (ie flavour & aroma alongside the IBU)
A choice of LME (extra light to dark)
Optional extra of selected grains for those that want to mini mash to add body & character.
An indicator of what yeast offers what characteristics (flavour aswell as flocctulation to assist bottlers)
....and a few tried an tested recipes.
It would be an excellent way for new commers to try the next step from kit making with an all in 1 package.

An excellent proposal ...price dependant. That's roughly 40pts at 4.2%?
..think you might have to be careful how you advertise the hop combos....couldn't say these hops equals taste of Bengal lancer for example
