Wilco IPA Mod?

Post by Uncle Joshua » Tue Apr 14, 2020 4:01 pm

I have a Wilco IPA (£12) and intend to add 1KG brewing sugar and 500g SML. What would be a good hop to make a tea with for that?

I just wondered if anyone had modified that kit before. I'm
Not sure there is a hop I don't like.

I use a mixture of Fuggles and Goldings.

Put say 25 - 30g in a receptacle, pour on boiled water to cover - about 500ml. Steep the hops until the water cools, pour off the hop tea into another receptacle, preferably a jug. You will get approx 250ml. Carefully add the hop tea to your wort/beer after a few days of fermentation. I do all my brewing on the same day each week so I prepare the wort, add the hop tea after a week, after a further week I take the beer off the yeast into a bottling bucket with some dissolved sugar and then bottle. I then leave the bottles in the same place I had the fermenter and after two weeks take to a cooler place for at least another fortnight.

I will now have the IPA kit, 2KG of brewing sugar, 500g of SML, 100G OF Fuggles and 100g of Golding's. I'd like something along the lines of a Brewdog beer if anyone has any ideas.

What's SML, please? I've looked it up on Google and can't find anything.

Not sure that BrewDog use much Fuggles or Goldings, you may need to invest in some US or Antipodean hops. They did do an IPA is Dead with Goldings though:

Goldings 37.5g Start Bitter
Goldings 25g Middle Flavour
Goldings 37.5g End Flavour
Goldings 125g Dry Hop Aroma

You can checkout all their recipe in the DIY Dog PDF...

Thanks. I should have said Brewdog style, rather than a Brewdog recipe.

I want that punchy Brewdog hop hit more than an exact copy of a Brewdog beer.

I'll refer you back to my earlier comment then... 🤣

Just pick the recipe from one of their beers that you like and follow the hop schedule*. You could also use something like Magnum as your bittering hop, then keep your fancy pants hops for later flavour and dry hop additions. if you want that punchy flavour, you just need to be prepared to buy more hops. Potentially two bags each of two to three different varieties depending on how much your making and how many dry hop rounds you're doing.

* assuming you have a boiler and use un-hopped LME or DME...

My starting point is a Wilco IPA kit. The only other ingredients are as stated. I don't want a Brewdog clone, just something in a style that they may brew, IE a hippy beer.

Well, I'd do what Nitro Jim suggested and make a hop tea. Also look at dry hopping for some more aroma too.

Forgot about his post. I wonder if 40/50g of each would be ok?
