Budget barrel - priming rate

Post by Matt » Wed Oct 25, 2006 12:58 pm

Is it correct to reduce the priming rate when storing in a BB?

I'm drinking my Octoberthirst dark bitter from a 2G BB and I primed 17.5g/gallon, as opposed to my usual 28g/gallon for bottling (brewing sugar). It worked out fine but I wonder if anyone has any official advice on this, me being a newb and all.

Just discovered our local Wilkinsons and picked up a 5G BB yesterday for 14 quid. I'm definitely in the tight-wad-do-it-as-cheap-as-possible camp \:D/

Cheers,
Matt

What pressure can the BB take? I tend to prime 1/2 tspn per pint. I have no idea on the weight as I measure out the sugar using my measuring spoons.

Could I perhaps increase this by about 50%? Would this just result in even frothier beer than normal or would it mean that the CO2 produced lasts longer?

Got one of each :)

So far the most annoying thing about the KK is that I have had to regularly top up the gas. Will try more priming sugar next time.

Unfortunately no way of keeping my barrels cold :(

I have them in the kitchen and the Budget Barrel is next to the Tumble Dryer (great!) with the KK next to the BB.

I would love to find the room for a fridge (which is when I would likely invest in Cornies) but for now it isn't an option!

I could possibly keep my beer outside, but I don't think the wife would appreciate me messing up her garden. Besides, with the winter months closing in, I wouldn't want my beer to freeze!

Thanks for the info DaaB 8)

I'm lucky enough to have a shed to store my brews and it is a little moment of joy filling a glass and taking a first sup through a frothy head in peace and solitude.

Cheers fellas,
Matt

While I do have a shed, all of my brewing equipment is taking over the majority of space. I would never fit my barrels in there as well.....

As well as the barrels, I do have plenty of bottles so can always have some chilled beer. Freshly poured at room temp does work for me though :)

We currently have a nice cool cellar where I can brew (it has a door to outside) and store my cornies. Sorted 8)

Sounds perfect Eskimobob. Do you have a comfy chair and runway lights for getting back up the stairs after a few?

It's crossed my mind :P
Still, we're renting at the mo so I doubt the landlord would appreciate me drilling holes through the floor to get the piping upstairs

SWMBO would know  and I'd probably not be able to convince her that it's a good idea. Never mind, the excercise is probably good for me
