Sparge arm extension

Post by Bigster » Mon Sep 18, 2006 10:31 pm

My phils spinny sparger doesnt sit in the middle of my mash tun as one of the arms is short meaning the spinning arm is 1/3 way along.

Has anyone had the same problem? If so what did you use to extend it - have been looking in wickes/B&Q and they dont have the tubing ( which is 1/2 inch and very solid ) and a suitable connector.

I stick a long bolt in the end to extend the (short) arm - a biro or similar would do :D

AFAIK the rigid Colby pipe is impossible to get in the UK. I used a short piece of reasonably rigid tube that fitted nicely inside the T piece and could be forced over the existing pipe by softening it in boiling water.

The tube I used happened to be left over from a garden irrigation system.

Nice!

Sounds like there are a few of us with this problem then :)

I really wish I understood what you are on about :)

I had considered getting a spinny sparger but think I will give it a miss and see if I can just make my own instead!

Pie - if you really want to make a spinny sparger then I recon it would be pretty easy but very fiddly and time consuming. Given that the pukka things are less than £20 I decided to foresake the DIY approach and sell out to the commercial version 8)

I've got a link somewhere for a brass tubing supplier where you could get the correct diameters required - if you're interested I'll track it down.

This is something I was thinking about for further in the future (still need a 3 tier system)

If I get my Batch sparge perfected, I won't even consider fly sparging :)

Thanks guys knew you wouldnt let me down. I had a bolt that, with a bit of tape on thread, has done the job.

Cheers
