Is this any good to use with a PID for a temp controller for a fermenting cabinet/kegerator?

Generally not a good idea to use a PID for controlling a fridge compressor. The PID can operate in quick on/off cycles as it approaches the desired temperature, this is not conducive to a long fridge compressor lifespan.

Room thermostat which can do cooling also might be a better bet....

Or you could try a Love On/Off Controller

They seem out of stock at the mo tho'

Most of use use these £15 PID's from ebay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PID-Temperature-C ... dZViewItem
There's a discussion on here somewhere about them, they don't come with manuals although there are some on pdf around here.

I got a couple of 2nd hand SSR's on ebay for £6 a piece, the only consideration is that they are 240v and can handle enough Amps i.e. 10+ also that
their switching voltage matches the PID which is 10v

The PID's come with a thermocouple but had to change it for different one for £2.50 -
keggerator build details here->

Frothers - have you checked the PID switching frequency ? i.e. is it frequently turning the freezer on/off to maintain temp ? If so then you may find that the freezer won't last very long....

It it quite slow. The temp raises a degree above setpoint then
it switches the compressor on it turns it over twice - buzz pause buzz
then leaves it on continuously until its returns to the setpoint.
