Boiler

Post by Immy's Dad » Sun Jan 21, 2007 10:04 pm

The wife has decided she doesn't like the smell of my brewing so has relegated me to the shed. I now have to buy a boiler. I believe DaaB and others have recommended this one.

He also mentioned adding another element. How does one go about this procedure? I really have very little in the way of tecnical skills. Is it straight forward? Do two elements mean 2 plugs? HAs anyone got one of these with one element? Does it work ok?

Anyone have any better ideas, I am on a tight budget, thanks.!

ID,

check out my link if you want an effective cheap boiler. I only use it for water though.

Orfy - how did you cut the hole in the plastic bin for the immersion element ?

I used the gasket as a template and used a Stanley knife with a new blade.

These boilers are absolutely fine. Most of us I would think started out with something similar :)
They will take a little while to bring 25 litres to the boil from cold hence some people add a second element, but if you are no good at DIY then you don't want to, A. Endanger yourself messing with electricity and B. Potentialy ruin a perfectly good boiler :(
A more straight forward solution is to make the boiler more efficient by adding insulation 8)
I believe DaaB and others have added a second skin of camping mats as insulation :)

DaaB wrote: I haven't added any extra insulation to my boiler, only to my mash tun. I havent added any to the boiler as it would slow down the cooling process after the boil.
 Sorry, my mistake

The insulationised (as George W. would say) jobby sounds like a plan.

Could one effectively use a fermenter rigged with a kettle element? Isn't the plastic a bit thin? I may just chicken out of this option, although I have successfully fitted taps to 2 fermenters, I guess you need sealant and the like for a job like this.

Thanks guys!!!

*edit* Just read your post DaaB, think I may be phoning up Leyland then! Sorted!!
