Using pub cylinders with plastic barrels

Post by tubby_shaw » Wed Jan 24, 2007 8:31 pm

Although I have now taken the plunge into the dark side  and procured cornies, 14lb CO2 cylinder and regulator, I still have "regular" homebrew barrels that I will still be using for a while.
I am pretty sure I have seen a post somewhere on the forum where a large CO2 cylinder was attached to plastic barrels. I've searched the forum but can't find the thread :(
So can anyone tell me how it's done :?: and where did you get the bits :?:
Thanks in advance :)

Hope and Grope have a universal barrel hose, think from memory it's in with the Midget Widget stuff.

Connector onto the s30 on the barrel, hose onto the CO2 regulator.

Thanks kt88man,
One shall be ordered as soon as I can find where the wife has hidden my credit cards

you can get JG 3/8" bulkhead fittings and screw them in the lid. When used with a tap it's just like any other valve.

i have took out my s30 valve and put a 3/8 bulkhead in then got this going to a 3/8 iso valve. worked a treat.
i will try to remember to take some pics.
my king keg is currently sitting at 15psi.
i can also set my regulator onto minimum and hook my KK up to my beer engine and it acts like a cask breather

universal connector? whats that?
i got a bulkhead and the iso valve for £5 posted (the iso valves go on ebay for 3.49 normally)

i can see how you can get much easier than the iso valve.
you connect your gas to the keg and set dial the the pressure wanted.
you open the valve and let the gas flow.
you close valve and disconnect gas line.
easy

much of a muchness IMO

and you have to screw it on! its much easier to just push the gas hose in! LOL

I've been planning a conversion of my King Keg to run off a gas cylinder for a while, I have the bits on order. I'm gonna use a Unviversal adaptor onto the S30 (from Hop and grape). Replace the inlet rubber with a widget world rubber and use a John Guest bulkhead fitting in the lid with a tube to bottom of King keg to draw off the beer. This will be fed to my dispensing tap that came with the Cornie (easier to use than the KK tap). I'm also gonna put a on/off valve in the dispensing line so I can disconnect if required and not have myself a beer fountain.

I've got my first brew in my Cornie and drinking now. It's Woodefords Great Eastern. Had problems with getting it down to a respectable FG but sorted it out (thanks to Daab, and dry beer enzyme) It tastes great!!

Still waiting for my Smugglers Gold to Clear in my King Keg. Think the float's come off, but it won't be a problem once converted. It's outside in the cold to help speed it along.
