thanks so far chaps, as my gran would say "there's are more than one way to skin a cat" :D

Frothy you are quite right about the gas thing, and seeing as I have a small power supply(15A), my original idea of going gas may be right. I got tempted by electric as it would mean later on down the line I could use it just as a HLT. Big gas burners are readly availible and it would mean some shinyness, plus the wife is cool with that route as she could use the burner for stuff too.

So if I go the same way as Jim, I mash in one vessel and then sparge in a seperate vessel. This should lessen the chance of sticking due to the fact the grain bed wont be as compacted, I assume?

I just want to minimise the DIY effect on getting set up, as when I go away for a month or two at the beginning of next month. And when I get back it would be nice to be brewing and switching off work head for a whole day :D

I really can't argue with that DaaB
I looked at Jims pages a while back and then got lost in the world of american sites, and forgot about the KISS rule.

Jim I thank you =D>

Cheers for those links oblivious, the first site explains the differing sparging techniques really clearly.

I used Denny Conn's website as the basis for my mash/lauter tun and it was cheap and easy to build (which is critical for me). As far as I can tell it worked well. I lost 1 1/2 degrees (F) over 75 minutes.
Despite the gear working properly I still managed to muck up the beer.

All grain attempt #2 will be next weekend. Looking forward to trying Jim's yeast propogating method as well.
