First Bottle Bomb?

Post by Spikesdad » Sat May 22, 2010 8:32 am

Hi folks,

Went into 'storeroom' to put some beer into condition, and when i opened door there was a bottle on the floor, about a foot away from the shelves. when i picked it up it had this ...

Image :(

As you can see, a hole about the size of a marble near bottom. Now, I haven't had this experience before, but i would have though if that bottle was under that much pressure it would just explode, hence the expression 'Bottle Bombs'

This bottle was on top shelf, about 3 and a half feet high, and not near the edge so i must have been some force to send it where it landed. It is also one of an older brew , and i wouldn't have said the rest was over carbonated!!

Anyone else seen this, and can put me out of my confusion??

Where was the beer; around the bottle on the floor or on the shelf and wall behind it? Just trying to see if it blew on the shelf or was dislodged and blew when it hit the deck? Very odd though! :?
If I had all the money I'd spent on brewing... I'd spend it on brewing!

Hi,
it obviously blew on the shelf, but must have flown with a good bit of force, only a small puddle of beer on the shelf itself, but must have landed 'hole upwards', cos only a little beer on the floor, an bottle was still very much full!!! Hows that for bad luck/ good fortune? :?

I've not had a bottle bomb since 1973 (yes, 1973).

Yours doesn't look like the normal bottle bomb.
To me, it looks like the bottle had some inherent or introduced weakness, and that's where the pressure from carbonation caused it to fail.

I had one yesterday.....went into the garage and thought "Hmm.....smells beery"......then I noticed there WAS beer all over the place. Couldn't figure it out at first and I thought a tap had gone or something....in the end I found a 2 pint bottle of a dark Belgian on the top shelf that was in pieces.

It would have had to have been on the top bloody shelf.....beer all over the lower ones :-(

Probably down to the recent increase in temperature. The pressure in my barrels has been creeping up too.

That's what i was wondering, and also has me worried, but the thing is i don't know if this is normal for bottle bombs or something a bit different?

Had one just like that a week or so ago, smaller hole but same place around the base of the bottle.
I put it down to a `bottle that had taken a knock along the way and had a weakness.
The rest of that batch was just nicely carbonated.

That's not a bottle bomb, that's a bottle sniper! Bottle bombs are when you're still finding tiny bits of glass in corners 2 months down the line. I had one that blew and the flying debris took out 2 other bottles 5 feet away. Not much fun.
