King Keg conversion

Hi.

I'm using a Cornie Keg at the mo and I'm well impressed. Using the Tap that came with it from Norm and makes dispensing a joy. In order to get similar benifits to using a the Cornie and utilise my old King Keg, I've made afew alterations as you can see in the photo. I can now connect up to the Cornie tap for dispensing (via Blue JG tap) and add Gas via a CO2 bottle and one way valve (white and red bit) so no need to prime the keg with sugar.

I used a universal gas fitting (5/16 tubing) from H&G onto the S30 valve, a JG 5/16 to 3/8 fitting to get to the correct size for the one way valve, I removed the inlet rubber but retained the pressure relief rubber for saftey on the S30. The KK tap was replaced by a John guest bulkhead fitting.

So far it seems to work great, the pressure relief valve lifts at around 1 bar but I'm sure that this will surfice for carbonation (for bitter) and I use less pressure for dispensing.

It also has the advantage of holding a full 5 gallons unlike a Cornie

I'm just in the process of doing another similar conversion this time to a top tap KK.......

If anyone interested the bit through the tap is JG Part number PI1216S 1/2'' Bulkhead fitting, I replaced the origional metal back nut with the KK taps nylon one and also used the KK tap rubber washer. To get down from 1/2 inch to 3/8 tube I used a PI061612S (1/2 inch to 3/8 tube stem reducer), one internally and one externally.

Thats a very good conversion Russ.
It may mean i can put my 6' beer fridge i purchased from ebay to its proper use.
It will fit 3 kegs in there and with the conversion you have shown to the kegs i can feed the c02 in from the side of the fridge(minor fabrication ).
Biggest problem at the moment is having to tilt the kegs forwards in the fridge to re-gas!

Could even cut holes through the clear door on the front and connect taps and run long enough lengths of tube to open the door to allow kegs to be changed as and when!

Are you still able to use a top float system in the back of the bulkhead?

Having done a similar conversion on a bottom tap KK (works great BTW, drinking Wherry from it as I type ), I've now adapted this top tap KK to take gas from CO2 regulator and hook up to my remote tap (type as supplied on Norms converted cornies)

This KK uses a 1/2 inch bulkhead fitting through the tap hole, a 1/2 inch to 3/8 stem adapter, 3/8 stem elbow and 3/8 tap externally. Internally theres a 1/2 to 3/8 stem adapter and a length of 3/8 tube that runs to bottom of keg. I used the rubber washer from the KK's old tap extermally on the bulkhead fitting and the nylon back nut internally to replace the metal one that comes with the bulkhead fitting.

On the S30 inlet is a universal gas fitting, a 5/16 to 3/8 adapter and then a one way valve, I also removed the inlet rubber from the S30 valve.

I removed the inlet rubber as you need large CO2 pressure to inject into the keg past the rubber (+ 40psi if IRC). Removing it allows me to se my regulator for 4 PSI (or whatever) and know thats what I have in the keg. The one way valve allows me to disconnect the keg from the CO2 supply and keep the pressure in the keg.

I have copied your king keg conversion. Just wondering what pressure you use to force carbonate in the kegs and for roughly how long. Also what pressure do you serve at?

Russ you're a star - thank you. I'm actuallly in the process of doing something very similar. I've just about got the gas in end sorted but gad started to wonder if it was possible to 'john guest' the tap end rather than having 1/2" hose & jubilee clips

By the way I was speaking to Hop & Grape today to clarify something, they do a widget world 10 pack of soft silicone washers for £2.55 IIRC which you can replace the standard inlet valve washers with which would negate the need for the 1 way JG valve

Wow that was a long time ago.

Conversion still going strong though! I have three and use them more than my cornies (they hold 6 gallons nicley so I brew 6 gallon batches)

To be honest one of my conversions doesn't have the bulkhead fittings. I left the origional tap on and converted it down to 3/8 with various size tubing and jubilee clips. Doesn't look as good but it works.

didnt know if you still frequented the forum as it was so long ago
I have just aquired a coka cola type fridge and want to store my king kegs inside and take beer line out to a handpump via a demand valve so need to convert to 3/8 line as the valve input is this size
I couldnt find the tap or bulkhead fitting on harmony hut so have sent a message to them maybe they have them or can get them
if not a piece of tube and a jg barb to 3/8 speed fit and original tap will do the job
