Post by smeggedup » Wed May 11, 2011 8:45 pm

hi,

just trying to find a cheap place to order some thermometers for my kit the kind here
http://www.valves-online.co.uk/acatalog ... meter.html

but valves-online are wanting £12.50 for p&p and i bet they want my shirt on receiving them too :?

so hoping some one knows of a website that is alittle fairer on the p&p please

What about a bulk buy? That seems like a pretty good price considering it includes the pocket / thermowell. Not sure I need one but could be tempted..
A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.

What about a digital thermometer - might be cheaper?

I use this one, take slots of abuse, wipes down fine and has a 5000hr AAA life span. Excellent for monitoring the mash. A few quid dearer but good nonetheless.

Should be easy to tell which one is lieing, stick your finger in the water if it feels pretty hot its 66/67oc, if there isnt much temp/warmth then its 35oc.

that was when i first started a year ago now. funnily enough i tried it in boiling water in the kettle the weekend and it read 97-98oc exactly the same as my 2 glass ones so maybe it is working now going to try it again this brew on sunday waste of money other wise. what is strange though when boiling the wort in the boiler my glass ones say 110oc is this correct?

I have one of those. The probe is not fully waterproof and eventually moisture gets in and screws up the reading. They do dry out but they are not suitable for leaving in the mash for the full term.

I did my first brew yesterday kept on putting the probe in boil pot whilst it was boiling just so I make sure it was a good boil, and in doing so partly melted the probe and bent it. It's still usable but won't be sticking it in boil pot again lol

These are good

Totally waterproof (you can stick them in the dishwasher)

20% off at moment plus 10% discount for Jims (enter JIMSBK at checkout) makes 'em £12.96

I've had a couple for a year or so, they seem great.

I have one of the ones Russ suggested, mainly due to the reasons above (moisture getting in).

At least with this one I dont have to worry about that.

So far so good, although ive only done one brew with it
