Neat idea, or pointless...
Neat idea, or pointless...
I found this on eBay. I thought it might be a good idea to fit one to the lid of the fermenter to monitor fermentation progress. A good idea, or pointless exercise?

That was my initial thought too, but it does have LEDS so you should at least be able to see if there is Krausen and activity. The lid on my fermentor doesn't seal properly, so there is never any bubbler activity and so I never know if fermentation is actually happening. I suppose I could lift the lid and peep in, but I'm always nervous of allowing nasties in.Not sure you would see much to be honest

Do you have a air lock on your fermenter ?
Re: Neat idea, or pointless...
I do, but I use a 33l stockpot, and the lid doesn't seal very well.Do you have a air lock on your fermenter ?

Re: Neat idea, or pointless...
Lifting the lid is fine if you have Krausen. I do it every brew and my lid doesn't seal either
You could however use this as a dildo cam of you're into that sort of thing.

When did 'good idea, or pointless exercise' become part of the decision making process for buying a gadget!! You could put your beer on a web page and be able to sneak a little look wherever you are!alexe wrote:I found this on eBay. lots of possiblities from the live fermentation cam, real beer in real time ...
or,, take a still every 10 mins to build up a 30-60fps film of the fermentation for utube
and if you wanted a special treat get a second and have a sediment cam set up.

I'll vote for pointless in that particular application, but it would be a fun toy to have.
Re: Neat idea, or pointless...
OK, so I bought one (for the princely sum of £9.46). I have a batch fermenting at the moment, but it's nearly finished (will be bottling tomorrow) so not too much happening, but I gave it a go anyway.
You can see a video snippet here
You can clearly see the bubbles appearring at the surface... It will be interesting to see what it looks like in the early stages of fermentation.

Then you need these. Perfect seal and fits a brew fridge with airlock. If there is any fermentation then these will let you know. Better than a hydrometer for letting you know if it is "done" yet.alexe wrote:That was my initial thought too, but it does have LEDS so you should at least be able to see if there is Krausen and activity. How does a fermenting bin with an airlock let you know it's done?
Without a hydrometer reading you don't know if the yeast has finished gone dormant for some reason or another
