Going AG - but want to buy pre-made equipment. Please advise

Post by Berko » Sun Jul 21, 2013 8:00 pm

Hi,

My situation is I've been doing two-tin kits for about a year, and want to step up to AG. I'm a bit strapped for time though, I have too many hobbies/projects on the go, a young family, and have recently moved house...

So, to make my life easier, I want to buy items which I can just connect up / plumb-in etc, to get my feet wet. I want to keep it simple until I've mastered how to do an AG brew, and I would prefer to keep it electric rather than mess with gas in my garage.

I'm happy to buy equipment from shops, or even a whole, pre-built solution.

Please could you knowledgeable people impart your wisdom, and guide me down the righteous path that is AG brewing!!

Thanks

Nick :)

Get yourself a big boiler from mrlard on here, and a brew in a bag bag from eoinmag(sp?) On here. All the flexibility of all grain, one pot. When you want more kit, talk to mrlard. :)
Fermenting: Russian Imperial Stout experiment, Raspberry turbo cider, Wilko Rose wine, Plum wine

+1 brew in a bag. I started doing this about 18 months ago & haven't looked back; I can't see any reason to go to a three-vessel system either.

in addition to the kit you've already got, you'll need (a) a boiler and (b) a bag. Boiler can be a stainless steel hob-top pan or a steel or plastic electric/electronic one, depending on the budget.

+1 for starting with a biab, i did and finally went 3pot but u might not??

dont even consider a boiler less than 40l :) another option to consider along with the above links is the 40l buffalo boiler, while it may need a little overboil tweak, its well documented, but not always necessary. and a more brewing friendly tap could also be fitted which again is a fairly simple job but not necessarry to get going..

brewing an ag biab beer will give you a taste of what and how your brewing experience could be eased and improved by extra kit if any :)
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate :(

Message Paul on here and ask. Should be fine. I think the answer here is to avoid google chrome at all costs.

Thanks for the links :)

Is it worth buying a bigger boiler than I need at the moment? Bit of future-proofing if I decide to do larger brews? Or will that cause other issues?

Depends on how much larger we are talking, as there is a sweet spot to be had. That is, if you buy 100L boiler but only plan to boil in the region of 30L, then there's a lot of pot ie mass going to waste, plus the position of the element/elements could be too high up for small volumes.

The flip side to the argument is that you deffo need head space in your boiler for your hot break, so if you do plan to boil 30L then you'll need something in the region of 40L to 50L to be on the safe side.

Likewise if you're looking at 40L to 50L brew lengths, then you need to be looking at say a 70L boiler.

Yeah I got that too yesterday before I posted. When I tried the link with the /en today I got the same message, and when I chose to click through and ignore the warning my work AV program Sophos doesn't like the site either; something to do with Malware:

High Risk Website Blocked
Location: www.angelhomebrew.co.uk/en
Access has been blocked as the threat Mal/HTMLGen-A has been found on this website.
Return to the page you were previously viewing.

Something is awry, either with the site or with 2 separate programs on different days. I know what my money is on.

+1 For brew in a bag. I did a lot of research before I started and jumped straight in at the deep end with a 50l volumn shiny 3 vessel system, plate chiller, silicone hose, camlocks, water analysis from Murphys, etc which is really great.

But, guess what? Ive now also got a small Buffalo boiler, a big bag and an immersion chiller so I can do "more" brewing in smaller volumes to experiment. I'm doing 3-4, small brews a week now experimnting with different grains and yeast strains.

Really theres no difference in quality from what ive noticed anyway and certainly no need to go BIG for your first time out. Much of the fun in brewing for some is building and faffing around which does give a great deal of satisfaction if your that way inclined, however for starting out and experimenting I really would advise to brew in a bag.

Hi

Someone has kindly bought this to my attention

I can see google has decided, rightly or wrongly, that the site contains malware

I have no idea what the problem is but am looking at it right now. bad news :o(

Unfortunatley the report from google analytics doesnt actually give me any more information to help me diagnose. Hopefully its just a case of google getting it wrong.

Will update here as soon as I resolve

Regards
Paul

Contact your host, it could be a false positive or one of the other sites on your server that has the infection. The malware in question is HTMLGen-A.
