recirculating over an IC will help chill better and will save u having to stir carefully not to disturb the surface and hot side airate..

I use a pumped whirlpool with a March 809 with the inlet at the front gives a few more L/min. Similar to Rob, think his in is in the wrong place personally. I use a 350mm diameter pot, I don't pickup at the very bottom and use a 10mm copper tube for the 'jetting'. A dark brew I just finished, so doesn't show up so well, but works.

Looks pretty cone-ish to me and its nice clear wort and thats a pretty big element sticking into the middle too !!

I have a 165kw 40 plate chiller, got it as is longer, maybe bit of an overkill for 9 gallon, don't have a hop filter to slow it down but still struggle sometimes to pump it through fast enough. 5-8 mins I guess depending on water temp, maybe even quicker. One thing, the first one I got leaked across the plates, they replaced it though. I used to use a small 12 plate chiller for many years I got from LHB and gravity fed it, no probs, I think it's the speed from 70-30C that is the main issue but will have to dig in my books to check.

Looks like a bottom of a 50 keg to me? If so are they dished at the bottom? does the carp just fall in?

No, its a 75L flat bottom brouland jobby! Although brewery whirlpools are sometimes dished. Maybe I should open an other thread?

5-8 mins to chill 9 gallons?? Thats very impressive, with that performance i would be tempted to attempt the whirlpool in the FV and with a nominal restriction on the speed or flow so your down closer to pitching temp, you could pitch as soon as your done pumping, or if fermenting on the break material is what your after avoiding, transfer into a second sterile fv for pitching, the transfer will probably help aerate it too..

i was chuffed with my home made chiller dropping to pitching temps with a 2l per min flow now i just feel inadequate ;(

I really need to upgrade my 20 plate 44kw chiller for something more efficient, have been looking at this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hrale-Stainle ... 4d1f3a275a thing is would it be noticeably more efficient to bother ? , I know the size/length of the plates makes a hell of a difference but if I got anything larger it wouldn't fit in my pressure cooker and sanitation would be an issue .
