Sodastream gas & Sankey Coupler
Anyone ever tried or thought of a way to connect a sodastream gas cylinder to a sankey coupler. The couplers would normally have a 1/2bsp socket on them.
Cheers

Hi Barneey
Not using Sankey couplers, I checked your recent post with all the pics - very informative, ty. I don't see any sockets, tho', just threads, so presume they are 1/2" bsp? I take the issues to be:
A CO2 cylinder (Sodastream/any) needs a regulator
How do you connect a Sodastream cylinder to a regulator?
How do you connect that regulator to a Sankey coupling?
An adaptor like this German one: http://www.magnetventile-shop.de/store- ... %2F&seo=14 lets you connect the Sodastream cylinder to a standard regulator - bit pricey, tho'. There is/was a UK Ebay supplier of adaptors and regulators for those cylinders - also pricey, IIRC
Then just the right size JG female thread to push-fit fittings (and a length of tubing!) to connect reg to coupler. Hope that helps, but if that's not the question, please ignore
Cheers, Chris

Re: Sodastream gas & Sankey Coupler
I got one of the UK ebay ones, which is milled out of aluminium, and stripped the threads in no time. My worst brewing purchase to date...
The German ones look much better. I think I'll get one myself soon. The setup would be...
SodaStream -> German coupler -> standard welding CO2 reg -> 3/8th line -> sankey coupler
That would make a nice portable system for taking your keg to a party and using the sodastream for serving pressure.

Re: Sodastream gas & Sankey Coupler
I`ve never used a sodastream cylinder with a keg before (have a pub co2 cylinder etc....) just thought with all the polykegs soon to be about it could make a project for someone on a budget.
Next question (I might answer this myself if I get around to trying it).
Has anyone with a sodastream ever fitted a piece of tube over an original soda stream stem (stem normally goes into bottle)

Re: Sodastream gas & Sankey Coupler
Think the idea might work best by doing a secondary / bottle ferment in the keg and just using the sodastream to squirt a little CO2 in from time to time to dispense.
A few experiments called for - but unfortuately I dont have a keg or brew on the go at the moment.
Just thought it might make a cheap method of using a £5 keg especially if you already own a sodastream.

Nice idea
Similar in concept to the old midget-widget
If you could fit some sort of pressure gauge to check pressure in keg it would be good.

Re: Sodastream gas & Sankey Coupler
Just an idea but here goes....
If you took the one way device of the gas side of the coupler so it became a two way outlet / inlet (very simple to do - either remove the duck bill or unscrew the coupler).
Then either have a dial mounted on a piece of 3/8 pipework to plug in OR simply mount a dial on a 1/2" BSP (or 5/8" BSP (built in gas valve ones) female thread screw it on the coupler - take the reading.
Is this idea flawed?

Re: Sodastream gas & Sankey Coupler
Cheers Barneey. My gauge works fine on a setup for corny type kegs, but doesn't get round the problem you highlight of the one-way gas valve on a Sankey coupler. Maybe it needs a dedicated coupler, with gas valve removed, gauge fitted to the gas side of the coupler, and a stop on the beer 'out'?

Re: Sodastream gas & Sankey Coupler
The "d" type stems in a coupler are shorter than the "s" one, meaning that if you connect it to a full keg it will only degas it nothing else - no beer shower, as I have a few of these couplers I might see if I can just get hold of a 1/2" to 1/4" fitting to see if the idea would work - no reason why it shouldnt. Quick and easy way to check a gas pressure in a keg.
Cheers

Re: Sodastream gas & Sankey Coupler
I`ve made up some degas / gas check units for Sankey Kegs.
Basically an "S" sankey coupler BUT with a "D" stem coupled with a pressure gauge upto 30psi.
Operation if you only want to degas a keg remove the JG stop from the top connect coupler and it will degas a keg (NO BEER SHOWER). If you want a constant OR quick check of pressure in a keg use the unit as pictured with the stop end in connect coupler and read the display.
You can if you wanted also gas in from the top JG fitting.
I have made 5 of these (I will sell 4 on).
Cheers

Re: Sodastream gas & Sankey Coupler
Hi,
I've approached the problem slightly differently, and more generically. I've put a pressure gauge, an adjustable pressure relief valve (the brass thing), and a 1/8" threaded Schrader valve onto a 1/2" BSP tee which I have then put onto the gas in of an "S" Sankey. You can connect whatever source of CO2 you want to to a tyre adapter, and away you go! The piccys not very good, but you'll get the idea.
