Buffalo Boiler 40l cc193 wiring assistance

Post by judasegg » Thu Dec 05, 2013 5:47 pm

Hey, after removing the thermal fuse and cutout and having issues with overheating, i've decided to reinstall a cutout with higher temp rating. However, I'm not clear on what the original wiring looked like? As far as I can tell, I've soldered 4 red wires together, all of which I believe need to go through the thermal cutout. I believe one of those 4 red wires was the one with the fuse (which I don't plan to replace).

I'm hoping someone can assist with the wiring, hopefully who hasn't modified their Buffalo Boiler 40l, or who is more organized than myself and may have some diagrams or images...

Also, I've managed to lose the small nuts for mounting the thermal cutout, can anyone tell me the size? I bought the smallest from B&Q 5/32" i believe, and they were too big.

Thanks in advance, really hoping to brew over xmas and my gear is in pieces, haha.

I hear of so many people here who don't seem to be able to resist modifying their Buffalo boilers. These are safety features and bypassing them is asking for trouble. Unless I have a special model I see no reason to mess about with the wiring. I've just done my 23rd brew in one of these and, apart from the 2nd brew where I'd allowed the element plate to accumulate gunk, I have had no issues whatsoever. Bypassing safety features is inviting a fire.
Best wishes

Thanks Dave, I'm a cowboy that couldn't resist mucking with electrics that I know nothing about. That's how I roll.

Or, it could simply be that the thermal fuse blew in mine after 4 brews, and the constant ticking over of the thermal cutout would blow the main fuse in my house, so I was looking for a solution to actually be able to use my £140 piece of kit, and keep under the radar of SWSBO, and removing the safeties was the most straightforward option?

Dave, as someone who has had no issues with this boiler, you are likely in the best position to assist me, with some photos/details of how things are wired up. Help this reckless fool enjoy the Buffalo as much as you have!

I understand your plight, but there are others here who have tinkered and have photos of the crime scene. I'm afraid I'm not inclined to take mine apart, sorry.
Best wishes

I am no electrician so am typing without any authority.

However if its going to cut the power to the element when it gets too hot, it should be in the element circuit.

without considering any warning indicator lamps it will work simply inserted inline in either of the final power wires to the element simply breaking the circuit as and when it reaches its critical temp.

if you have a lamp/bulb/diode/ that wants to be turned on as and when the thermal cut out is in operation, well then its a bit more than a simple circuit n i dunno..
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate :(

The thermal fuse should be in the direct power line which I think comes straight from the ceramic block.
This leads into the thermal cutout then to the element.
