Insulation for a SS boiler

Post by punt1971 » Sat Dec 14, 2013 12:51 pm

Hi

I know a lot of you use poundland camping mats as insulation for your boilers but does anyong use that shiney silver stuff with the fluffy middle? Will that be better than a camping mat?

I don't mind spending a few extra ££ on it since it'll retain my shineyness(ish) but would like to know if it's any good :)

Cheers!

I use a foil backed camping mat as a base (foil side facing boiler) and then the foil bubble wrap stuff as an outer skin.

are you thinking of the foil backed glassfiber?

think it be messy when wet, and not very nice to work with.

the foil bubble wrap on its own does not have good insulation properties. but i think works well with the camping mat then foil bubble wrap combination. decathlon have foil backed camping mats for not much £.

i use it on mash tun, so dont know how it performs/survives at kettle temps. probably reaching its failure point.
i think some people have used HT armaflex / armacell .

2 layers of foil bubble wrap from Screwfix on my boiler. I don't know precisely how well it works, but its easy to work with, relatively cheap, stays cool to the touch (suggesting it is very effective) and still looks shiny!

I use two layers of 6mm foil backed camping mat on mine. First one silver side in and second one silver side out. Works well and is also cool to the touch. Think it was less than a tenner for the two mats when I got them. :D

That sounds like a plan Horatio!

Just found a pair of 180cm x 50cm x 8mm on ebay for £8.35 delivered.

My AG kit should be ready to Rock n Roll in the New Year :)

PS. What do you use to fasten it to your boiler? Duct tape?

I used self adhesive aluminium foil tape.

Not sure what Wolfy used in his build but it looks way neater than anything else I'd seen for insulation

They sound like a bargain!

To secure them I use the tape that Andy linked to, just a wider version at 70mm. You can get a very neat job with mats and tape too.

Cheers! I've just ordered some aluminium tape, 45m x 48mm for just over a fiver, can't complain at that.

Now I've just got to cut the holes, fit the tap and element, fit the insulation. Will post a pic when it's done. Not started my thermopot mash tun yet, gonna be a busy Xmas break :-)
