Another 45 litre Igloo Mash Tun

Post by FutureBrewer » Wed Dec 07, 2011 4:20 pm

Hi johndavis,

I ended up using a hacksaw for the slots after all - not too bad when you get into the swing of it :D

Just wondered - What would be more effective. A manifold or something like the one in this link?

Jobs a good un.

I like the copper manifolds - no risk of them collapsing and a nice even drain. Swings and roundabouts really.

Inspired by PDTNC's recent mash tun build and a desire to go all-grain, I thought I'd have a go at making my own mash tun from an Igloo cool box.

Future Brewer,

I am unashamedly copying your designs for my first foray into all grain brewing (which I am documenting and will upload once I have finished the build) and have a question about the mash tun manifold. I have made the manifold and you said that you used a hack saw to cut slots into the underside of the piping, was this all over the bottom of the manifold or is it just for the longer pipes?

Cheers

Will be doing something similar in the future, but am hoping to use a push fit PVC (or similar) pip through the wall of the cool box - done this with the current 28L verison my mate has and don't even lose a degree as plastic is a far better insulator ...

Hi Darthballs,

I've unashamedly copied EVERYTHING from other forum members ;) As for the hacksawing, I cut the slots on the four long sections only.

Look forward to seeing the build post!

FutureBrewer,

I followed your design to the letter. Even purchasing the items from BES as you did. The configuration and aesthetics are incredible, thank you so much. I love my new mash tun. It has yet to be tested, I will leave further feedback after my first AG Brew Day.

I wouldn't recommend an angle grinder? You could easily make the holes too big? I suppose a dremmel disc might be ok as they're like 0.5mm. Very informative build :)

When my brother made his he used pliers to 'crimp' his fittings. That way they still slide apart easily but don't fall apart and don't let air through that could increase deadsoace.
He used a junior hacksaw as the blade was thinner than standard hacksaw but he still gets a bit of grain debris through. Pretty sure that's unavoidable.

Hi, I'm currently making a copy of your design and something struck me... Rather than trim the reducing tee and the 2 adjoining tees, would it not be possible to turn the whole filter 90 degrees and cut into one of the 23cm tubes and mount the reducing tee there instead?

Would this have any effect on the flow date with the pipe orientation being altered???

Look forward to your thoughts

Couple of questions on this.

I've got a coolbox with a 15mm diameter hole in it. Will the straight adapter used here fit that? (BES part no 7786)?

Also, are you supposed to user washeres with the straight adapter? (Where the metal screws down onto the coolbox)?

Many thanks.
